how far is it to the canyons from the race off fishers island? my boat is probably to small to go that far out. the wellcraft 22 walkarounrd,2000 with a 200 johnson, new to me has a 99 gal gas tank at 2mpg and on a nice day would a 30 mile trip sound reasonable. if so what kind of fish are out there? at the 30 mile range.

Re: the race to the canyons

Assuming that you are talking about Fisher's Island, NY, the closest canyon that I can find using Google Earth, is 77 miles from the midpoint of the island's south shore. From Montauk Point, it is 62 miles. The location is N 40 degrees, 19 minutes, 06.41 seconds, and W 71 degrees, 12 minutes, 34.11 seconds. I give you this location is decimal format, but I haven't figured out how to get Google Earth to display it that way.

While I fished in the vicinity of Block Island as a kid, I have never fished beyond that point, so I may be missing a smaller canyon or two. I also believe that you can do some research by buying nautical charts that cover the area - they should have the canyon depicted.

Re: the race to the canyons

Welcome to iboats! I am sure you will find just about any information you may need right here and we have a great selection of boating accessories too!

Depends on where you go out of. The canyon is really no place for a small boat with a single engine. You would want twin engines, electronics and a good radio.

However.... fishing in the waters from Fisher to Block Island can yield quite a bit. Blues, cod, bonita, and sharks galore. No telling what you will get trolling. Just my opinion because I have fished those waters.... the weather can change in a snap. I was on a charter boat that rescued a crew of a 40 footer that went down. Once you are out that far and the boat goes down it is salvage to whoever tows the hull in.

I would rather spend the cash and leave it in the hands of a charter captain. Their boat, tackle and headaches.
