I have an 84 60 hp Johnson, that I need a new prop for. Its current prop is a 11 3/4 in diameter. A local mechanic has a new one that is 12 1/4, and I was wondering if its to big. He says it'll be fine, but I'm looking for a second opinion. Thanks.

Re: The right prop

Propeller diameters as large as 13" were installed on your model. The most important thing is that the propeller pitch and design is suitable for your setup.

For a list of the OEM propellers originally used on your motor, go to the BRP/Evinrude store, navigate to your model's gearcase and click the number pointed to your propeller. The cursor will move to the list of props and clicking the magnifying glass will give the superseding part numbers.

Use the iboats propeller forum for more specific assistance.

On that note I think my tach is off, but currently it says its running 4000 rpm with a 17 inch pich. The prop in question has a pitch of 13. I'm worried about chaning to many things at once as well. I wouln't even mess with all this if it wasn't such a decent price.

Diameter is not the primary determination in prop selection.Pitch is.
Number is usually written on barrel of prop _ _ X _ _ ( diameter X pitch).Diameter is a product of the prop design and usually a secondary consideration only as to if it will physically fit.If the prop is for your application the diameter will fit.
In order to know if a prop is right we will need your present prop size
and the max rpm and speed. If you read the helps on the top and bottom of the prop store page and the stickies at the top of this page it will be clearer for you.
