The "Search" function

Am I the only one who HATES the search function since iboats went through its facelift. The old search function was much more streamlined than the current. With the current search function I end up getting 10 hits on the same post, whereas with the old version it would hit only one post once. The lay out was much more appealing too.

The reason I am complaining is that the search command was the best single asset this website possessed. I could usually find what I wanted quickly. Whether it be an old post I remember reading 1 year back or finding info on something I was fairly "green" with. NOW, forget it... I just ask. What's worst is that some of the members who used to contribute don't anymore and it's hard to find their input, and it especially hurts when that member was a knowledgeble one.

I am done ranting, sorry. JB I was just wondering if there was any planning on changing it back to the old way or modifying the current search function in anyway.

Re: The "Search" function

I find my self wandering to other sites because of the problems with searching. I am "green" to everything boating, so it is my bread and butter here.

Many of us have been patiently waiting - could we at least get an update on the fix?

PS: There's isn't a forum for site issues anymore, so where will this thread move to?

Re: The

No doubt about it. A great function of this site (And alot of saved posts) was lost when the transformation took place. No point in even going to the search anymore....

Re: The

I haven't used, or tried to use, the new search function before today.

I went to Non-boating Tech (where this is going) and searched for an old post of mine about my water heater.

BINGO! 10 seconds later I was reading that post.

Maybe this system requires more exact parameters than the old one, but I wouldn't call it useless.

JB,

I have a good feeling that what you just encountered was a bit of good luck. Try finding something else! I have had success using the search function, but limited at that. THe older search function, like other internet sites, was much easier to use. I guess my biggest problem is how you get many hits on the same thread. If they could just eliminate that and list each thread (once) it would be 100% better.

A new version of Search should be online any day now.

Posted nearly three weeks ago. Still no changes what-so-ever. You tried so hard to explain that iboats cares about it's members, and that they were working hard to fix the problem. You bashed and insulted me in the process, and 3 weeks later zero has changed. Now you try and tell us the search works great...absolutely ridiculous.

The reason the search doesn't work worth a s*** is because they don't need to use it, and they won't make any more money if they fix it. It's simple business. They obviously couldn't care less that they are driving all the best members away. And customers, no less.

Re: The

JB,
Put in the words 'bow' & 'rail' - look at all the hits for the word "tRAILer" It's returning the equivalent of '*rail'. There is nothing about 'bow' let alone bow and rail.

Also notice that it returns hits on the forum name! :^

Now put in "rail" (single or double quotes - they both give the same result) Nothing - so how would you search for 'bow rail'?

Imagine what you get trying to find info. on mounting a trolling motor near bow rails!! That is why we call this search "useless" and that's why I have to take my searches to other sites.:'(

Please, please find a way to fix this otherwise the number of "Users Online" is going to keep going down! (I haven't seen it over 100 in a long time!)

ZmOz.

I did not bash or insult you. I complained that you bashed and insulted iboats. Now you do it again. Shame on you.

I don't know what happened and I don't claim that the search function is a good one. I do know that a full time conehead (or geek, if you prefer) has been working on this P.O.J. BB since it was installed and I was told that an improved search function would be in soon. I guess I was wrong. Isn't the first or last time.

Do you expect me to praise them for doing a crappy job? For ruining the forum, and driving off all the best members? For crapping all over customers like myself?

That isn't for you to decide. Other people agree that you insulted me.

Are you honestly trying to tell us that somebody has been working on a computer for 8 hours a day 5 days a week for the last several months and they haven't fixed anything? How stupid do you think we are? If you're just going by "what you were told" then you were lied to.

If they don't want to fix the forum that's their business, but to pretend like they are is ridiculous and nothing else. Even if the forum was 100% perfect by tomarrow, they have already shown a huge amount if disrespect to their members and customers.

Are you familiar with the phrase "don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining"?

Re: The

It's not so hard to find a specific post when you know what's in it.

But there's no way to limit a search to, say, 1983 90hp like you could before...it returns all the 1983's and all the 90's...add something like "spark plugs" and it returns all "spark" and "plugs", too. None of the advanced search features will make it do otherwise. Maybe there's some kind of programming language like with percent signs and stuff, that you're supposed to type in there? I dunno.

Like the others who posted here, I found it to be useless therefore stopped using it.

Like most of the others who posted here, I'm not in the habit of making silly demands of a provider of a free service that has already done me a world of good. No matter what happens from here on out, my return on investment in iboats is infinity.
