Since I have to remove the carburetor, I might as well overhaul it.

The valve cover ( on top of the engine is it?) is rusting, I might as well replace it. New gaskets. Back to the manual.

Don't do that. You are risking a huge bill of sale. If there is something in there from the carb or something like a bolt it will kill the pistion. Get a magnet and fish around in the cylinder or take the head off and inspect. You may get lucky.

I am reading the Seloc manual for v-8 engines. I am ovewhelmed and confused. I do not know what to expect. I have never opened an engine. Anyone out there has the specific manual on removal of cylinder head forAlpha 1, v-8, 305 ci, 1998 or 1999 - engine 101?

How many hours would it take for a good mechanic to remove the cylinder head and then put it back all together? For me, I have to multiply that by 4 or 5 times.

Damn, summer is so short let alone house chores, fix my leaking roof and I have to find if there's any junk in the cylinder area.

I am begging for a manual. Anyone?

I think I will just spend my weekend at the shooting range and put it all out.

If you have no mechanical background i would advise letting a shop do it or find a buddy that at least knows engines.
The exhaust needs taken off,then the intake manifold,then the valve covers and heads.
Thats just to find the problem,then the fix may require the engine to be removed.
A good mechanic with the correct tools should be able to take it apart in a couple hours.
