The stop button!

I found the insulation falling off of the wires behind the stop button on my old 1973 9.5 HP Johnson. At first I thought that somebody had skinned the wires to short them out to get the motor to stop running but when I started wrapping electrical tape around them I found the insulation was just falling off. I just thought I would tell the rest of you guys who have these old 9.5 Johnsons to keep an eye on those wires. They might need to be replaced. I feel lucky that mine didn't touch and keep the motor from starting.

Good call gps. You may want to look into one of these jobbers. I put them on all my old motors. They retain the push button kill feature as well as offering a lanyard/deadman kill tether. Best of all they only cost about $10 (amazon.com) and install in under 5 min. I go out a lone a lot and wouldn't even think about it without one.

Thanks Kfa I have one of those on my 25 HP Merc. I have ordered the replacement kill button already from the local dealer it has the wires attached that were losing the insulation and will connect right up to my existing wiring harness. I ordered the lean-rich knob that was missing for years too. Once I get the carb. cleaned this old motor should make a pretty nice kicker again.
