The tachometer is functioning most of the time, but many times it will either: max out and then fall back to a reasonable rpm, or it was for a while showing about 1000 rpm higher than the motor was running, especially in no wake zones, or many times given the MPH and sound of the engine, it will be showing something off where it should be. I had a mechanic tell me that I should just replace it. I would be have not had any luck finding one which looks the same. Anyone have this issue or any idea of what the problem may be?

Start with cleaning the connections on gauge and check the gray wire on the coil

In most cases it does just need to be replaced because the manufacture that made the gauge either no longer makes that one, or they are out of business. Find out who made the gauge and see if they can repair

Is there a small selector switch on the back of the tachometer ? Does it allow selecting the number of engine cylinders ? Yes. Slide the switch FULLY up and down several times to clean the contacts. Might get lucky.
