I?ll tell ya
It?s been along time since I had a day like this.

Packed the boat last night and fired it off this morning before I left.
Went to the lake and unloaded.
Parked the truck and jumped in to the boat and turned the key.. CLICK !!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me?
Plenty of battery, hear the sol. click.
Wonderful, starter took a dump. OK THINK!!!
Check my mini tool box.
AHHHH ? socket set. 13mm largest socket.
Screwdrivers
Sand paper
MMMMMMM think!!!
4 tie wraps.

OK move the boat over on the beach.

Take the starter off and sit on the picnic table.

Disassemble and look. Nothing except dirty and carbon.
Brushes black rear bushing dry? Armature rusted and looks like touching the magnets.
OK lets give this a shot.
underscored the commutator with a mini screwdriver. Then sanded the contact surface and brushes,
OK now what.
Think
Found half a cement block. YEA.
Took the armature and ground the rust off the outside of it by rubbing on the block..
I now have 3 people sitting at the table with me and I?m giving a starter overhaul class.
You got to be kidding me. LOL
Have to clean the dust and junk off the sanded parts.
OKKKKK
AHHHHH YES.
?excuse me sir is that your car there??
?Yes it is? he said.
?I need your help?
?Sure, this is interesting? he said.
?Can you start your car and rev it up ?? I asked.
?OK he said? with this weird look on his face.
Hehehehehe he starts it and revs it up. I stick the starter parts on the end of the exhaust pipe and blow out the junk.
Back to the table.
I need some grease for the bushing and starter drive.
I run up to my trailer and pull off the bearing buddy cover. GREASE.
Put it where it has to go and start to assemble it.
Last problem.
4 spring loaded starter brushes and no way to hold them in the housing.
Out come the tie wraps.
No one is saying a word.
Wrap them around the brush holder and tighten them down.
Just enough to hold them in the slots. YES
Put the lower brush holder into the case.
Now I have tie wraps hanging out.
?I need a knife? I said. 3 came out.
Cut the wraps and slide them out and close the case.
Everyone is just hanging around while I reinstall the starter.
Hit the key
And
VAROOM.

Everyone at the table was cheering and hi fiving.
One guy said ?that?s the most amazing thing I?ve seen in a long time?
I thanked everyone and went out after I tried the starter a few times.
Still need to replace the brush and bushing holder. I don?t trust it now.
And I caught a few fish.
I don?t give up to easily?

Re: The things you do to go boating.

Imagine an 80's Chev carryall blowing black smoke and stalling out on the road. Along comes a dude in a 3 piece suit, throws an $80 briefcase full of small tools up on the fender, proceeds to take the top off the quadrajet carburetor and clean out the needle valves, then put it back together to have it running right in about 10 minutes.

I was that computer engineer/good Samaritan. The look on his face was precious.

Now this ain't no chit........:D

It actually happened. It was fun.

That was when computers were the size of busses, and fast printers involved hydraulics.

The difference between an auto mechanic and a computer field engineer.

An auto mechanic.....
Puts his tool in a tin box
Wears coveralls
Gets dirty up to his elbows.

A computer engineer.....
Puts his tools in an $80 briefcase
Wears a 3 piece suit
Gets dirty up to his elbows.

Re: The things you do to go boating.

Excellent job, and excellent story. Sounds like something I would have done.

Bought a 1959 bug-eye AH Sprite in a barn for $200. I got it started and paid the nice man, then set out for home, about 20 miles away. Well, the old, hardened mechanical fuel pump diaphragm took that occasion to rupture.

I was about a mile from the barn by then. I studied on it for a while, then figured out the solution.

I went to the back of the car and put my mouth on the fuel filler pipe and blew as hard as I could. It was enough to fill the float bowls on the SU carbs. Fired it up and went another mile or so. I repeated that about 20 times and got that car home OK. A new fuel pump and I was golden.

That was in about 1970.

I would have just asked a few guys to gather around on the transom and push started it! Then I would have made sure I always anchored on top of a hill for the rest of the day. ;)

I can't help but think how funny THAT would have looked to a passerby ! gotcha home though !

kinda reminds me of an old blonde joke... she had a dent in her fender and was instructed to blow really hard on the tailpipe...didn't work... she forgot to roll up the windows... :D

Re: The things you do to go boating.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I just figured it wasn't going to hurt anything if i took it off there or at home.
I as all packed with food etc.
Hey, sometimes you get it right.
It was actually the high point of my day.
Once i left the water it was all downhill.
I hope I don't have another day like that.

CATransplant:
I know exactly what your talking about. Done lots of stuff like that to " get ya home"

j_martin:

WE use to be able to get away with stuff like that.

Tune ups with a screwdriver and credit card to set the points.

People actually repairing stuff on the side of the road.

My grandfather would tell some stories about stuff like that.

Be safe everyone.
Thanks again.

Re: The things you do to go boating.

It always seems like parking lot repairs always makes for an audience. Friends and I went to as Van Halen concert back in the early 80's in Charleston WV. When I pulled into park, my clutch went out in my VW beetle. At that time, I was a mechanic on air cooled VW's. I had my tool kit, jack, and most important a new throw-out bearing. ( I knew it was going out, but a mechanic always put off his own repairs till the last minuet :D )After the concert was over, the 4 of us pulled out the engine and changed the bearing. Put it back together and back on the road with a working clutch. What really surprised me was some of the ones that watched me actually made it a point to drive their VW's 120 miles to my garage to work on theirs.

That was a great story on the starter. Now try taking your carb off and take it apart in four foot waves on Lake Erie :D BTDT :D
