Just wanting to showoff the results of my rebuild of a 1982 Cobia140 Sunskiff. My 11 year old son and I started in Sept.03 on the rebuild. He was more help than her will ever know. By the end of the rebuild of the hull he was patching holes by himself, and doingas good sometimes better than I was doing. The rebuild consisted of new transom, stringers,deck,livewell, and storage compartments. The inside was redone with gel-kote I mixed it wrong and the inside turned out pink. After a couple more coats of white gel-kote it's back to normal. I sold the boat to my parents about 10 years ago and it just sat outside and rotted. 3wt,<br /><br />Nice work, very nice work.<br /><br />Boy does that boat bring back memories. My first project boat, a 15 ft. Manatee was the same hull as yours. I finished mine in 1985 and powered it with a 1983 Johnson-50.<br /><br />I caught many a Redfish, trout and flounder out of that boat, in Louisiana.<br /><br />That hull has been extremely popular, particularly among Southeastern boat builders.<br /><br />The original design was created by Starcraft as a tri hull runabout. After they stopped building it, they sold the rights to many companies.<br /><br />It lends it self well to a saltwater, CC rig.<br /><br />Yours turned out great. Tell your son, good job, too!

The fishin trips will be that much better because your boy will be bustin' with pride being on the boat that "Me and my dad" made!!! Good job, so many guys would be sending the kids inside saying "Dad's busy right now". Might as well start teaching them while they still want to listen!!

Thanks for all the postive responses. My boy is quite the sport, could not ask for a better kid. He even does dishes and laundry with out being asked, wish I could get his mother trained like that "ouch". I have been a lurker on the forum sence September silently sorting through all the information, some of it makes you scratch your head, and some answers questions you did not even know you had. Like the post says the worst is over, grinding, glassing, fabricating. Now the fun starts rigging,rebuilding lower units, rebuilding trailers, but they don't itch. Thanks for all the help.

Can you tell us more about he Gel-Kote process you did for the interior of your boat. I have a very similar boat and I need to do exactly what you did and I like the results you got. Thanks

Whoohoo, the Gel-Kote is pretty easy to apply, but can get expensive. I was lucky,I was able to get Gel-Kote for $25.00 Gal. I used just under 4 Gals on my project. I had about of 4-5 coats on everything.<br /> Sand every where you are going to use the Gel-Kote, 4 1/2 inch grinder makes it easier. Wipe down with Acetone until rag is clean. then paint on. I used a short napp roller and throw away paint brushes. Before you use a roller roll it over some Duct-Tape several times to get the loose fibers out or they will be all over your finish. Besure to get Gel-Kote with wax or it will never set up and will be sticky. I had re Gel-Koted the inside of this same boat about 11 years ago, it never peeled or cracked. For the splatter, just mix some color in a small can of Gel-Kote take a small throw away brush and start slinging.

Where can I get the Gel-Kote that you used. What did you use on the grinder, a wire brush or sanding pad?

I used a 30 grit sanding pad, 60 grit would probably be better though. As far as the Gel-Kote I got it locally, Marine Connection Liquidators Inc. Ft. Pierce, FL 772-465-6460. At a savings of $55.00 a galon over West Marine and Boaters World might be worth it to pay shipping if they can do that.
