Moving right along, the arrival of the new throttle cable may put the shakedown back a bit. Fathers Day Birthdays and Graduations are also setbacks. Thanks to all for the positive feedback and we look forward to helping others, if we can. I love that B.O.A.T thing, but I am still struggling with the meaning of WOT. I will get used to the jargon if I don't run out of money first. The person who never made a mistake was person who never did anything.

OK. duh. Here's a better question. As you may know I have been trying to fix the boats steering system and it appears the only thing in needs is to replace the cable. I ordered a cable I thought would work, but according to the folks at Teleflex it will not work. Further I am unable to get a good read on what the correct lenght of cable is. The "dude" from teleflex says it should be a fourteed footer but caculations from the site and from my fifty dollar manual indicate 11 feet. He offered a complete replacement system but from all I can tell it is identical to the one I already have, except that my cable is frozen. I think the no feedback system is good but penny wise pound foolish keeps preventing me from spending the othe 80 bucks. :D Oh yeah, on the direct reversing engine what dertermines the direction of the prop. Does the impeler continue to force water up through the engine or does water reverse flow?

You'll be happy you did (as I was). It's simple to install and eliminates the hassle of dealing with the old frozen one. I wouldn't "steer" you wrong. :D

Hey thanks, 2. I am not going to hassle the frozen one. The current Steering gear is ok just the cable is the problem. What I am faced with is getting the correct cable to connect the two working parts, rack and helm.

Thanks, IBn. Yes I have seen that formula and that is why I am perplexed. According to my caculation it would be an 11 foot run nut to nut. The guy from teleflex says the measurement should be end to end and the coincidentally comes out to very near 14. So that is a push, except that if I specify 14 and they send me a cable that is 14 nut to nut I will have 3 feet more than I need. Can't just be style of manufacture that makes the difference in application, can it?

Boing! Hey dunaruna, you posted some links in another thread and now I can't find it. Recent Post, but keep coming up empty. I thought I had used it but history shows now such link.

the direction of the prop turning is done by reversing the engine direction.
You kill it and start it in forward , or reverse..
teh engine starter spins backward in reverse
then the engine starts backward..hence the prop, turns the other way ..the lower unit is direct drive ..no neutral ,no reverse..
the impeller turns backward and water flow is still there ..
You are going to be a Admiral, by the time you post enough on that motor to get it running ..
lol..

My secret is out. Got the title on the trailer straightened out today. Don't have to hassle license for five years........ Add 40 more to total cost. Also, in case you hadn't hear we ran the motor and it didn't sound too bad. Getting a new steering device, hopefully Saturday. I boasted I wanted to do a shake down cruise on Sunday, but it will probably be a week from Sunday. You didn't mention which lake fork you are from. Is it West of the Muddy Mississippi?

That's Texas, Lake Fork, Sir! :D We ran the engine in the horse trough and it got pretty good revs, only problem is it is not peeing. Revved it enough to dump half the water and rock the boat forward. Didn't want to run it too long until we are comfortable that it is getting coolant. I was born on the border of OK TX on th OK side. Dad was working on a ranch in Englewood KS.

yeah, but no help. We test ran the engine. got good revs in forward but only chug and died in reverse. Also, not circulatiing water. New steering may be Sat, prob. Mon. Did you get the Awl do that? ;)

So don't go in reverse :p

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I don't know these motors - can't help. You need Clams.

I do have one little suggestion, don't run it until you have the water circulation thing sorted out, you'll fry the block.

Aldo

Yes, it don't go in reverse. No danger of frying the block if it won't run. Gets it quick in forward though. Do you suppose cc is turning a deaf ear?

Do you suppose cc is turning a deaf ear? [/QB][/quote]

I doubt if Clams could/would turn a deaf ear to anything inline - he's the man! I'll bet he's momentarily occupied with a rebuild or something. I've been to his shop and seen him in action. He's in pretty high demand these days.. :) He'll resurface as Providence allows..

Is that a "dockbuster" you have? If so, the book "Iron Fist: The Lives of Carl Kiekhaefer" will offer some good reading on the origins of the direct reverse concept. I think you would enjoy it as a good companion to that piece of history that you have there..

Thanks 2, and I am sure cc will be of great help and will give it freely. DOCKBUSTER, couldn't have said it better myself. One of "hired hands" discussed this prospect on the way back from dropping another of the "hired hands" truck off for brake work. Do you know anyone who might be interested in taking this "piece of history" (some how another adjective comes to mind) off my hands. Big heart, Small pocketbook. Mighty aspirations, teeny capabilities. :(
I am sure there are others who have some comments on this "technology". I had an old Oliver Diesel that would run in reverse but it too ran like history, but that was a four cycle engine. Seems like the reversing would come natural with the two stroke. The most imprerative thing at this point is getting the coolant circulating. Care to share any observations. C'mon, be a hero. :D

Technostupeedo,

I'm afraid that I have little to offer in the realm of the heroic. Hopefully others will contradict this observtion with real world/motor experience, but from what I've read and heard the "dockbusters" were pretty challenging even in their day. The battery has to be at full charge religiously to accomodate the starting in gear and the slightest sputter or sneeze can send one "crashing." That said, if you can nurse this thing to health, you'll have a great sense of reward and satisfaction.

I'm sure someone would "bite" on ebay if you chooe to list it there.

Did you check for obstructions in the "peeing" outlet tube? Sometimes insects or debris will cause blockage. Good luck.

Incidentally, you are rapidly approaching and soon to pass me on # of posts :D . I need to get busy..
