Re: Theoretical question?

unless someone has mummocked the wiring or installed an automotive altenator it will die, thats how we turn them off. when the key is turned to off it breaks the circuit from the red lead from the motor to the purple lead to the motor, unplugging the harness will have the same effect with an added feature of some voltage spikes that can damage solid state components in the altenator and some ign systems. same as dissconecting a battery cable when running.
just dont do it.
its stupid and tells one nothing about the systems

Re: Theoretical question?

I figured it was a bad idea and wasnt going to do it anyway. I am having a small problem. every once in a while while on plane, the boat engine blips like someone very quickly bumped the ignition key into the off position and then quickly turned it back on before the engine dies
I asked the question about the harness plug because It may be the culpret. It is plugged in and has a hoseclamp holding it together but it still doesnt plug in very tight.

Re: Theoretical question?

I wasn't going to say anything on this, but before everyone goes off the deep end about unplugging that round 10 pin plug, It won't hurt anything on a carbed engine. (Not sure about EFI)

When you unplug it, it does nothing to the alternator. It's till attached to the main starter terminal and will not peak the voltage like removing the Pos. battery cable from the battery. The ignition sees the same thing. Just like pulling the kill switch or turning off the ign switch. Nothing is going to happen different than just shutting off the engine.
