Macksea,
The engines are out - right?
Why dont you ask the mechanic to remove the oilpans and visually check for sand in the bottom of it and to remove the oil filters and cut them open.
While the pan is off its also very easy to check the bearings for damage.
If you find sand in either of these then further investigations are needed.
There's not a lot of labor involved with either of these options but it would surely avoid a lot of heartache later.

I would not hesitate if it were mine.
My 2c worth.

Good luck,
Peter

To my knowledge, the engines have not yet been removed from the boat. Last I heard from the insurance company - a week ago - we were considered a constructive total loss and 'a small check to get you started on repairs will be on the way'. Sending an email to the insurance company this AM to find out the status. Makes sense though to just pull the pans and filters and see what we find - obviously sand in either of those two places has to mean a rebuild right? Bearings, crank, rods, cam, rings?

Nobody really questions the fact that Americans are suit happy. And personally, I understand what you mean.

Everyone questions why we pay thousands in insurance year after year after year to get, "fix your sand filled engines, wer'e not replacing them, that costs too much". It is unfortunately a vicious circle, but you'll never get sympathy for insurance companies. And, after all, they're the ones on the golf course, spending our premiums. BTW I live in Mass, insurance company scandle of the USA, you know, the state that MOST insurance companies WON'T do business in. No sympathy here, I just want what I paid for. Replacement coverage, not some peice of junk after market crap, I don't pay after market premiums.

I would definately ask to have the filters removed and opened for inspection if they intend to leave the engines alone.
However if the Insurance totals the boat and pays you out enough to walk away from it then that would no longer be your worry.
Water on its own wont kill the engine if it was drained out and refilled with fresh oil.
The mechanic SHOULD have replaced the filters by now anyway as some types of filter media (paper) may break down if it is saturated with too much water. It is only celulose and that is water soluable.
Some brands are more tolerant than others.
Good luck.
Peter
