Hello, my name is Brandon and I am new to this forum. I found the forum while searching for info on a boat hull I purchased last night. So I shall be searching through it for the next few days.

here is my boat:

A 1967 Winner 15'
almost completely stripped, except for the steering wheel and pully/cable system (whats that called?)

The engine I plan to use on it is a very well running 20 hp Johnson.

Problem is, its a tiller (?) not the steering wheel type, so ill be trying to convert it.

and of course i need seats.

ill threw this suburbaban seat in there to giggles:

You are definately in the right place. I would reccomend getting yourself a manual for the motor. Check ebay for an original manual, not a Seloc or Clymers, or try outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. Do a compression test, clean out the carbs, change the plugs, replace the impeller and change the lower unit oil , along with new gaskets. Take care of that baby and she will take care of you. I have the owners / repair / maintence manual that came with the engine, but no real repair manual.

Engine runs great. always running by second pull (most of the time, the first) I have all the maintence reciepts from the prior (origional) owner, I dont really think all thats nessary just yet.

A fluid change wouldnt hurt though...


But, I should probably just get a manual anyway to help with the conversion of the tiller

and water pump kit. you can used the cable/pulley system, just need a merc connector. the 20hp will get you around, but not a speed demon. 40hp -50 hp recommended. i'm running cable/pulley on a 1956 Duracraft 14' aluminum, with 1993 40hp get 30 mph.

the max h.p. is 45 (so says the tag)

40 hp on a 14' ?

I currently have a 16' aluminum (which I didnt like, so i got this) and its max hp was 35.

With the 20hp I have, I was able to get 21 mph up river, and 27 mph down.

problem is my engine is a long shaft, and the boat called for a short. im sure if that plate was level with the boat bottom I could have gone faster.

what kind of speed do you think I could get out of the new boat using the 20 hp?

I have axcess to a 75 and a 110 hp engine also. Which I was going to see about borrowing the controlls out of.

whould one of thoes be better? or way to large?

here a boat I was given. battery died in the water a few years ago. was taken out, and parked, for 5 years. then given to me.

If it was me, I would sell the aluminum boat and trailer, sell the 1967 Winner and trailer, sell the 20hp Johnson and then put what money was necessary into refurbing that nice looking ski-boat with the Johnson V-4 that "someone gave you" and I'm guessing is the 115HP motor you mentioned. Looks like more fun potential from that combo. Good luck with your projects!

I know nothing about it other than it looks amazing to me

Thats why I like the 65 so much.

It looks like a full size boat, but on a small scale. much like that red thing.

I saw it when I was visiting my dad in canada, he didnt like it, but i sure did.

One other thing about your 1965 Winner. You said "max HP is 45". Not all horsepower is created equal! Motors built prior to 1985 were "rated" by their manufacturers and some had values that were not realistic; both higher and lower. Beginning in 1985, the manufacturers adopted some standards that limits the variance from advertised HP and also specifies that HP be measured at the prop shaft. Just be aware of this before mounting any late model motor on an old boat. The accepted rule of thumb for HP comparison is to reduce older motors HP by 10-15 percent. Good luck and be safe.

here's my 1956 Duracraft, with the 40 Johnson tracker. it was a long shaft so i build a jack plate for the short shaft transom.
