Was the thermostat working in your motor in the past? If so, I would just assume the cork gasket was in the proper place, and I would put the new ones in the same location the old ones came from. Looks like the diagrams have different model years on them. I would go with the one that says 1992 on it (#1).

Thanks for the response iggyw1,I would go by the same way that it came out but the thermostat was missing when I took it off,the manual on my eng it like pic #3 but the reason I asked is I was reading a post last night and this guy had said he did it like mine says and his eng ran hot because the cork gasket got caught in the spring and I'm already rebuilding this motor and I would love to get the thermostat in correct before I have to put the heads back on,and I thought someone could let me know the correct installation before I did it.thanks again

What I posted was just a simple thought I had. I don't blame you for wanting to get it right to avoid any problems of over heating. Someone will chime in here with some real help for you I hope.

I would go by the first diagram, that's the way the official BRP/ShopEvinrude site shows it.

I remember dealing with this, i just cant recall which way i went. I think I had it further to the fore.
One thing i did do is drill out the middle hole more because if that gets clogged the system fails at low/medium speeds

The system works by having the water come up against the back of the thermostats and when that water gets hot they open. With the poppet values and thermostats closed the water pushes through the system through the little hole in that middle plate. If that hole is blocked then no hotter water can come through the system and open the thermostats. So the thermostats stay closed while the engine heats up- dangerous. If you drill that little hole wider then crud is less likely to block it and hotter water will arrive there sooner permitting the thermostats to open earlier. I think i almost increased its diameter by twice, i didnt want to do much more as the smaller hole helps keep the pressure in the system at low rpm
