I am in the final stages of reassembling my 84 Volvo 5.7L (chevy 350) There are 3 water temp sensors that where removed, one on each side of the black and one on the intake manifold. My question is, how do these connect to the water temp guage? Are they all connected in parallel with each other? The ones one the block read about the same (in the mega ohms)in a boiling pot of water but the one on the manifold reads much lower in the same water (in the kilo ohms).

Jim

Re: thermo sensor Volvo 5.7L

Sounds like something a previous owner installed. Volvo only used one sender on the engine and that was in the intake manifold. Trying to run any 3 senders to one gauge would be impossible. Since the gauge is nothing more than a milli/amp meter with a face numbered to match the amperage. If you were to have several in parallel or series the reading on the gauge would be useless. Perhaps your boat had a couple of seperate gauges mounted somewhere else.

Maybe the senders on the block are not senders, but temp switchs that are part of an aftermarket overheat alarm system.

Dave

Or are those ports simply there to accomodate the drain petcocks? Do you remember removing a sender at either location? This unit typicaly will have one sender that operates the temp guage and is mounted on either the t stat tree or somewhere on the intake mani. You may also have an alarm sender ,usually mounted in the same general areas.Do you have connectors on yuor harness to accomodate all these senders?

Wiring was pretty much butchered by the previous owners. Motor obviously not original either. One of the sensors did in fact come from the port on the top of the intake manifold, the others where on each side of the block. I will try to get some pics. Hooked up all the Vital items(not the water yet), fuel, exhaust mans, igniton, and fired it up for a few seconds the other day. Man was that cool. And loud!

After checking this morning, The 2 extra ports where someone installed the extra sensors are located between #1 and #3 sparkplug anod #6 and #8 sparkplug. The block drains are lower than that on each side so it is not that.

Sounds like they are mounted in the head, not the block? I still think that they may be temp switchs. To confirm that they are a switch and not a sender, test for an open circuit between the post where the wire connects and the part that threads into the block/head at temps up to about 200. At some point (probably between 200 and 220 degress)the circuit should close (ground) and the alarm would sound.

Dave

If the location is where it's shown in the picture below (item #3) then it's normally a pipe plug, and a previous owner had something of his own installed.
They do go into the water jacket in the head.
