thermostat cork gasket

For the Mercruiser mechanics the question is----is the cork thermostat gasket installed differently on different model Mercruisers. Meaning do some models have the thermostat directly against the thermostat housing while some models install the cork gasket first and then the thermostat? This question is for raw water cooled engines.
