I've stripped the socket head portion of the plastics thermostat cover. I can get small grip of the socket head with a cresent wrench but can't apply much force and can't get the cover to budge. I srayed with WD40 hoping to break loose. Any suggestions? Drill out?

Tap on the plug to break the gasket sealer, then use a box wrench that fits snugly.

Sorry for the mfgrs of WD 40, but it is not your best answer to metallic rust busting.

Texasmark: Any recomendations on a rust penetrant/loosener? I have tried several with no clear winner.

PB Blaster is the only thing in a long line of rust busters that worked for me.

It's a plastic part with gasket sealer holding it in place; rust buster will not help. Use the correct six point tool as mikesea said.

Had the same problem last spring and ended up having to drill and chip it out. It did work but I was worried about ruining the threads. Was able to get new cover from local dealer. On the others, I used the six point socket and that worked better than the smaller nut portion that sticks out.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the advice. I was not able to get a good grip with the box wrench, in fact I damaged the cap more so decided to chisel off. I them wedged a wide blade screw driver in the inside diameter and srewed off. What a pain!

For metal-metal , 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. Do not get on your hands or plastic or rubber parts.
