Installed a new impeller in this engine last fall, but it was so late in the season, I didn't get a chance to drop the boat into a lake, but I did manage to submerge the LU into a livestock water trough to at least idle the engine. I was a little concerned with the poor flow from the tell-tale - almost more steam and dribble as opposed to a steady flow. Was defifitely better with the old impeller, that was only changed as preventative maintenance. The pump housing looked reasonable, however it does not have provision for a driveshaft seal, so I can imagine there is a pretty good escape path for water right there.

At any rate, I pulled the thermostat housing to find no thermostat. I robbed a thermostat from a 1059BD, but the thermostat overall length is too great to allow the cover to be installed. On the installed engine, the thermostat is in a vertical orientation, whereas it is in a longitudinal orientation on the 1059BD. i-boats lists two different Mallory p/n's; 9-43024 & 9-43022. Is anyone ouy there able to steer me in the right direction?

Thank you all in advance.

Hi stubtail.

Can?t help you with you thermostat but looking through the parts list there appears to be a seal on the water pump between the pump and the water tube. From the serial number I?m taking that your motor is a 1976 105hp.

I have attached a photo of a new pump kit which has the seal. You can buy them separate but I could not find a photo of one on it?s own. You may be loosing pressure because you have no seal.

I have a later model motor and I have had a similar problem with water pressure. The seal on mine is just a force fit on the water tube. If the gearbox is not kept straight when fitting it back to the motor the seal can be knocked further up the water tube preventing a good seal to the water pump.

That's not a seal. That's a guide tube.It helps align the tube from the motor.
There should be a seal on the top of the pump housing.
Without a seal your not gonna get the results you need.
If it ran without a thermo then it aint gonna hurt till you get the right one.
Just get the seal.J

Thank you all for the info. I figured this was an early model, and maybe that explains the pump housing. This pump housing has a soft black rubber guide tube, not the hard white plastic one as in the illustration. Additionally, there never was, nor was there intended to be a lip seal in the housing. There are no provisions for installing a seal. I think that this should be in a museum somewhere. Going forward, my best bet may be to swap out a pump housing with provision for a driveshaft seal from another 'donor' engine I have kicking around.

As for the T-stat, I'll probably get one of each PN and go with the one that works.

Thanks again for the help.
