I was taking the thermostat housing bolt off to replace the thermostat and seal and one of the bolts broke off. My question is, can I just use the one bolt and silicone around the other side until I get a completely new housing? Thanks in advance.

i dont think you want to do that but not knowing the engine type not much advice can be given. I had that happen to me and i used a heli coil fairly easy to do and holds well.

Sorry. It is a mercruiser 3.0 with the alpha one drive. It is on a 1987 invader.

It doesn't matter what engine, you still need 2 bolts to hold the thermostat housing on.

Here is a pic to show my problem. Im sure the answer is still no but pics help out alot because I may be describing it wrong. Either way I have a friend that runs a machine shop. Im going to have him drill it out and retap it.

Try a easy out, or drill & re-tap the threads.

Put some penitrating oil on it and let is sit overnight then try to pull the broken part out with an easy out or similar.

Now THAT is a "PB Blaster" job if there ever was one. Run down to your closest Wally World and pick up a can.....you won't be sorry. That is some good stuff. As mentioned, soak it overnite, then use an ease-out. No, I don't work for the company, just know it's some good sh~t.

That is the name I was looking for and was too lazy to go look at the can I have. It really is good stuff.

You could soak it in pepsi-cola. I know sounds crazy. We used it in the Air-force all the time. Soak it overnight.
