thermostat housing question #1

I?m putting together the thermostat housing on my 1985 Mercruiser 260 hp. Raw water cooled (not a closed cooling system). Boat didn?t have the housing when I got it, so I?m not sure exactly how a couple of the parts go together.

1st question is concerning the thermostat sleeve. It?s the brass colored thing in the photos. It has a sort of lip on one end of it and is open on the other end. Which end goes into the housing first? Is it like picture #1 where the lipped end goes down into the housing or like picture #2 where the lipped end is at the top of the housing and the open end goes in first?

Re: thermostat housing question #1

Thank you Don! This sounds stupid, but do the parts install in the same order as the diagram shows/ I didn't realize that the thermostat went in first..Does it sit down inside of the thermostat housing so that the spring part of the thermostat is actually inside of the block?

I guess I just thought that the sleeve went in first and then the thermostat sat on top of the sleeve in the top portion of the housing (just below the V-thing)

What is the purpose of the sleeve? Does it somehow hold the thermostat down in there or is it used to direct water?

I didn't think that the thermostat was big enough to stay at the top of the housing without that sleeve going in first...

Sorry I seem so confused on this...

I believe the sleeve looks to be a spacer to hold the thermostat seated. And yes install in the order seen in the diagram.:)

Yep, that's the way it goes.
All that drawing is is a parts breakdown, I just blew it up a little and added the text for items 5,6,and 7.
