thermostat ...in or out

Folks, winterized last week...drained all water ...probed block and manifolds. Filled system with af through the thermoatat hoses...left the thermostat in after reconnecting hoses. Is this ok as I ha e read other posts they are sometimes removed?

if you are filling through the hose on top of the thermostat, and the engine is cold (which it would have to be) then the thermostat will be closed and not allow the antifreeze to pass to the block. They stay closed to allow the engine block to warm up faster. If you took the thermo out, filled and then re-installed, then that should be okay.

As long as you put antifreeze in that is good for an engine, then leave the TS in. If you used the pink sttuff made for RV "water tanks", then the TS may corrode.

i have never heard of a corroding t stat with rv pink?????........we winterize about 300 boats a season with rv pink, and allways leave the t stat in rv pink is the only stuff we use

Oops, I poured -100 F antifreeze into the hoses i removed from the thermostat. The big hose took at least 2-1/2 gals before I saw the AF come out of the thermostat...that should have filled the engine right? I did not remove the TS. Is this ok?

WOW you do not need anywhere near that much af.... fill the water pump and fill the thermostat housing till it starts running out.... IIRC you can probably do two engines per gallon although I always used the whole gallon.... Now I have closed cooling so it's been a while since I needed to do this.

Did you also remove your fresh water supply hose and drain it? (shop vac works well)
