1973 Chrysler, 120 hp. Did not have a thermostat when I got it. Purchased one from Franz, SELOC has two illustrations side by side, one has spring side in block, one has spring side in cover housing. Which is correct??

Actually, while it may appear incorrect, there s only enough room to install the thermostat with the spring and temperature sensitive expanding plug in the cover. If it is a stock or stock sized thermostat, it just won't fit the opposite way.

Re: thermostat install position

The thermostat usually gets removed when the engine starts to over heat due to the pump impeller wearing ..I hope you checked this out .....

Yes, that was first thing I did when I took it out of storage and tried to get it ready for the water again. I did try the two different install positions, it will only fit with spring down into block. The cover is not deep enough to hold spring. I did do a back flush through the block through the thermostat hole. Yesterday I retro fitted a pee hose and fitting. I'll have to wait to get it back into the water.

Yeah, After I answered, I saw that your engine is earlier. If it has the thermostat on top of the head with the tube running down the center of the head, then yes, it does not have enough room in the cover and again can only go one way. With the newer or later Chryslers that have the massive rectangular head, the hole in the head is not large enough for the spring side to fit.--Amazing how the designers change their minds.
