Where is the thermostat on a 1987 Mercury 20xd and also, whenever I start the engine up should it automatically start peeing out of the pee hole or does it have to get warm before it starts peeing?

That one we need the serial# for 2 block designs for that motor 1 has the thermostat one doesn't. If you have a thermostat the housing is where the tattle tale hose attaches to the water jacket will be a thermostat housing on the left side of the block. If it does not have a thermostat the hose comes straight out of the water jacket in the middle. Waterflow will be a strong stream right away with NO thermostat, if you have a thermostat it will piddle until the thermostat opens then a strong stream.

0B115204 is the serial number.. The pee hole comes out of the middle of the back of the engine, above the spark plugs. I just took the mount off and there was no thermostat in it, is there supposed to be a thermostat right there in that hole or is it made without a thermostat right there?

These are the two different 20XD blocks.

No thermostat;

no thermo.PNG

With thermostat;

thermo.PNG

The arrows point to the tell tale elbow with no thermostat and on the bottom snip, the arrow is to the thermostat housing.

If you had to remove two bolts to undo the housing, item #38 in the bottom snip, there should be a thermostat. If all you have is an elbow and no housing, you have no thermostst.

Can you tell which set up you have?

You do not have a thermostat that starts at serial # b118

Mine looks like the bottom diagram, the elbow screwed into what looked like a housing and that was held into place by two bolts and it had a gasket; but inside the hole there wasn't a thermostat, but it kinda looks like there should be one there.. I'll post a picture later... If it is supposed to have a thermostat, would it be okay to leave it without one? Or do I have to put a thermostat in?

With no thermostat, the motor will run colder than designed and take longer to warm up. I would put one in.

The paper gasket for the housing is
Sierra #18-0323
Quicksilver #27-14318005
Thermostat #s are
Quicksilver # 14586
sierra # 18-3549
Rubber gasket for thermostat # is
Quicksilver #27-62386001
Sierra #18-0182-9
You need a total of three parts for it 2 gaskets and the thermostat.
