I'm helping a friend now and then with maintenance on his 1976 25 foot flybridge boat with 2 x 165 OMC electric stringer. In return I can borrow the boat almost any time, great deal actually. These old OMCs are not that bad if you treat them well.

We do have a minor issue these days, that seem a bit difficult to solve.

Both engines will not reach operating temperature, they stay in the bottom of the temp gauge, no matter how long they run. We also know what is wrong. Small parts of rust are squeesed in the opening of the thermostat. We then take out the thermostats, remove the rust and the temp is fine again, for a short period. A trip or two in the boat, there is rust in the thermostats again.

The rust flakes are very small, but the effect of them can not be neglected.

I was thinking about switching to another thermostat housing (Mercruiser) that uses another thermostat, which hopefully was not that senisitive to rust. But it looks like Mercruiser uses the same thermostat as OMC, on the inline engines.

The engines are raw water cooled, and the boat is sailing in salt water.

Has anyone dealt with this problem?
