thermostat problem????

1885 mercrusier 170hp/470 is the thermostat necessary for the engine to run?? or can you leave it out like the old american cars???

speaking as a guy who used to drive them old american cars,motors are built to run a certain temp.not good to leave the t-stat out.

Yes it will "run" but the cooling system will not function correctly. That may or may not cause other more expensive repairs down the road.
