I have a 1996 Mercury 25. My motor does have a thermostat and my little motor runs like a champ. I have never changed the Thermostat and i am just wondering what the temp of the water should be when it comes out of the tale tell. I just replaced impeller, thrust washers and some orings and it sprays water just fine once it is warmed. Should i be able to put my hands in it for a few seconds or a few minutes before it is to hot or to cold.

Re: Thermostat Question

My current association with Mers stats is the number 143F in the 90-150 hp range. Would assume other hp engines are set accordingly. 140F happens to be the normal temp setting for household hot water heaters to give you a reference for how the water should feel.

Some Mercs are plumbed such that as soon as the impeller starts turning you have water out the tell tale and on others, such as yours it seems, the stat has to to open and the output of the stat is plumbed out the engine exhaust tube and also to the tell tale.

So there you have it.
