thermostat/replace as part of regular maintenance??

Johnson Ocean Runner 225 HP 1997<br />Do I need to replace thermostats on my motor as part of regular maintenance? If so how often is it recommended or do you leave "well enough alone"? <br />Thanks ahead for the replies.

Thermostats are definitely part of regular maintenance. I replace them when I replace the impeller, which is a minimum of 2 years for me. Others will say once a year, but I'm always in open water. Shallower, siltier water you should definitely swap t-stats and impeller annually. I believe on that motor it takes less than one minute per thermostat to change out. Should be at the top of each head. The only problems I've ever had with OMC motors are cooling issues, even though I think I'm keeping up with the maintenance.

Thanks Montauk 17.<br />Could an idle problem (shutting down at dock when idling not with muffs) be related to t-stats. I have done just about everything including carbs,hose,pump ect.... I will be replacing them but since I am a novice I am not sure.<br />Thanks

abobo - Not having t-stat may result in idle problems since the engine never gets to the designed operating temp.

So it is safe to assume that faulty/old t-stats can also result in bad idle? My motor runs like a charm as long as it does not sit in idle for a while cause it will shut down and I have to re-start and it does it again. Other wise it runs great.
