when I opened the t stat housing today and retrieved the stat and plastic insert I noticed there was not an o-ring under the stat. When I reinstalled the stat I used an oring then the stat then the insert. How important is the oring in this housing?

For mine it shows insert, thermostat then gasket. Don't know how much that gasket would change things. Might make it a little loose but that's it.

Yeah same thing. I installed mine while I had the housing upside down looking into it. I was just wondering about that gasket/oring importance.

There's an exploded view under the Parts Catalog link. Type in the Serial Number in the field provided. You're looking for this on the left hand side (assuming your engine isn't a MAG 350 or 2BBL TBI):

STANDARD COOLING SYSTEM (5.7L/5.7LX ALPHA)

According to the manual.

Looking down at the housing.

First the "O" ring.
Then the thermostat.
Then the sleeve.

Roger that. That is the order I put them in. 160 tstat and my temp gauge is reading 175 after about 10 minutes on the hose at 1000 rpms. Does this sound about right for this engine?

Our 5.7 must have a lower tstat. Will stay around 120 to 130 at a slow cruise. Will go to 150 to 160 pulling tubes and skiers.
