This thread shows what my housing looks like:
http://forums.iboats.com/omc-i-o-in...ermostat-removal-replacement-help-548946.html

I am confused, the oring is rock hard if it is even an oring. I spend about an hour picking at it to no avail. But lets say I torch the oring out and pull the stat out of the housing, when I reinstall the new stat, what will hold it up in there? An oring alone can;t by itself keep that up there can it?

Howdy,

T-stat housings in a raw water cooled engine are a LOT like manifolds and risers (cast iron and they get rusty) . When they get too rusty to use, and you cannot resurface and continue to use the internal t-stat mount point.....you must replace it.

But lets say I torch the oring out and pull the stat out of the housing, when I reinstall the new stat, what will hold it up in there? An oring alone can;t by itself keep that up there can it?

If it doesn't you'll need a new one. Luckily, you can still buy them.

OMC # 0985880

I found a few online for about $90 or you can go to EBAY and get a used one for about $40 (but it might be just as rusty as yours!)

Yes, it's an oring.
Yes, it will keep the thermostat in place.
Yes, the oring will get hard and brittle after years of use.
