thermostat replacement

I have a 35hp johnson 1995 (AML35D). I just replaced the water pump (kit) and cylinder water cover gasket and thermostat. Upon removing the cover and the thermostat I realized the thermostat was stuck open. Now after running the motor after the thermostat replacement it seems to run a little rough at idle. Do i need to do adjustments (carb) since its running a little hotter at idle due to a properly working thermostat?

Re: thermostat replacement

Thanks for that! But I have already cleaned and installed a rebuid kit for the carb and the motor ran fine the day before the thermostat replacement. I didn't realize that the thermostat was stuck on open unitl I took the cylinder cover off to replace the gasket because it was leaking water. I purchased this motor about 5 months ago and I could never get this motor to idle right. Could it have been the stuck thermostat? So I have adjusted everything (idle speed, fuel mixture) to a stuck open thermostat. Do I need to readjust to a normally working thermostat?

Re: thermostat replacement

You probably will not need to readjust. The engine will just run better with a properly functioning thermostat.

Re: thermostat replacement

if you made carb adjustments on a cold running motor chances are you made it to rich.

cold running motors need more fuel to idle smoother.

so if you made an adjustment with a cold motor i would make a new carb adjustment with a warm running motor.
and also check the idle timing.

Re: thermostat replacement

Thanks to all who replied! What is the normal running temp of the motor? Before I could touch the flat area between the cylinder head without having to remove my fingers. Now I can leave my fingers for only about 3-4 sec before it starts to hurt.

Re: thermostat replacement

the 3 second method is about right.

the motor should run in the 140 to 150 range

it is a older carbed 2 stroke so they all do run a bit rough but there should defenatly be an inprovement with the tstats working and the carbs and timing set propper.

good luck

Re: thermostat replacement

Upon doing the necessary adjustments I found a leak in a fuel line running from the top of the powerhead to the bottom of the powerhead. What is this fuel line for? What are the effects on the engine having a leak in this fuel line?
