thermostat working

my motor had previously been neglected from a thermostat. Whoever had it before me just took it out. Now that I have one, tell me if this is correct.

the water that comes from the hole changes. Itll be warmish cool - then to hot, then back to warmish cool, then to hot.

is that just the thermostat opening and closing. I didnt think the water should ever get hot. I mean its still where I can touch it, its pretty darn hot, but I can still touch it. About that time, it goes back to warm / cool.

just checking and seeing if this is ok.

the cylinder head stays pretty warm too...I can touch it, but its pretty warm. I can probably hold my hand on there for 2-3 seconds.

Yep prolly just thermostat opening/closing.
If you can keep fingers on block for 2-3 seconds then probably ok. You could get a IR thermostat gun to verify. Good and cheap insurance.

As for water getting hot, well not sure how hot is hot, but mine gets warm, I wouldnt say hot like coffee and should definitely not be steaming at all.

What motor do you have? Probably one with the thermostat controlled recirculating cooling system? Sounds like it. The 'stat is constantly monitoring the temperature and cycles between recirculating and discharge as needed to maintain the desired temperature. BTW, that is the same way that your car works. Haven't had any problems with your car lately have you?

I think I have finally got this thing running on all cylinders and where it should be.

140-150 is the operating temperature so it will get hot to the touch. average home hot water is 135 degrees.

Yep all sounds good. I just recently replaced a thermostat on my '86 15hp. Used an IR temp gun to verify operation. You actually want t athermostat in there because you get the most efficient combustion at a specified temperature range. Thats what the thermostat does, keeps it in that range. Without one the motor probably runs too cool for optimum combustion.

ran like a champ today at the lake. I had to adjust the manual trim to get the best performance...this motor is picky on how it is trimmed.

now my only problem on my rig is a small leak in the back of the boat somewhere.

That's an easy fix. Just bring your wife along and hand her the bailer bucket.
