Thermostat

I am waiting on a thermostat to arrive for a 4.3 Volvo Penta and was wondering if I could boat this weekend without it? The water temp will be abour 75 - 80 degrees. Is a thermostat really necessary in South Texas where the water temps never drop below 50 degrees?

It is necessary because the oil never gets warm enough while operating.If you are not going to cruise for hours at a time,i would say you can boat this weekend.You can clean up the old one with some vinegar or some tarnx or on off if you wanted to have a thermostat on hand.Did you try a a NAPA auto parts store.They stock quite a few marine parts.Charlie

jUST KNOCK THE CENTER SECTION OUT OF THE THERMOSTAT, PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND ENJOY YOURSELF UNTIL YOU GET THE PART,YOU DO NEED SOME RESTRICTION IN THE FLOW WHICH THE THERMO BODY WILL PROVIDE,,ENJOY AND DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY.

I hate to state what seems to be the obvious, but if you only ordered one, and not two (one as a spare), won't you have this problem again?

Without a thermostat you will overcool the engine. Short term this is not a problem. You may not idle as well as normal, engine may even tend towards stalling at low RPM's, plugs will tend to foul over time. Fuel economy will not be up to par. You might through a new set of plugs in along with the new thermostat.
