I have a a evinrude 1979 9.9 and a 1991 v4 evinrude. I want to change the Thermostats in both of these motors. How do I do it and is it a big job??

Two COMPLETELY different animals. Get the manuals.

The 9.9 will be easy, the V-4 will try your patience.

Hate to disagree with DJ, but......both engines will try your patience. The 9.9 t-stat is at the bottom of the head.....no fun. The t-stats on the V4 are below the exhaust cover.....no fun there either.

Re: Thermostats

Both of these motors have ever had the thermostat changed. One is my main and the other is my kicker. Both discharge way to much oil from the exhaust and run rough in cold water. The 9.9 actually drips oil from the lower end water ports, in a pool, after I use it all day trolling for salmon. I was told both motors need to have their thermostats replace, because the motors are not up to the proper temp inorder to burn the oil. Is this true ?

OBJ,

Oops, you're right-brain cramp!

tkcenterline,

Before you go through all that work, do this.

Check the temps of the heads when the engines are warm. They should be in the 120 to 140 degree range.

The carburetors may be the real culprits of your issue. Or?

Also, have you ever "decarbed" either one? If not, do that first. See link below.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000016

I recently purchased a mid seventies vintage Johnson 50. When I changed the water pump, "Aya Curumba" I couldn't believe the amount of "gunk" collected in the exhaust (leg) of that engine.

You may or may not have a malfunctioning thermostat but my '89 Johnson 15 does the same thing and always has. When it stops THEN I'll start worrying.
