thermostats

I've been reading a lot of posts about thermostats recently and now that I have my 1993 Johnson 115 (TJ115TLETS) in good running condition I am curious to find out if the thermostats are working properly. When I run on the muffs the water that comes out either side of the lower unit just above the antivent plate is warm to the touch(not hot). The tell-tale water is cold. Is all this normal and what is a good test to see if the thermostats are operating as they should? I have not had any over-heating problems or alarms. This motor has never had them replaced and also has very few hours on the engine, overall. I bought it new but just haven't put that many running hours on it.<br />Thanks to all for the excellent help in the past.<br />Bill

Just do the touch test Bill. Look for the flat areas on top of the block just forward of the head. After idling for a while, you should be able to lay your fingers on them for several seconds before having to remove them. Simple test but works. On the crossflows, the port head usually will run a tad cooler than the starboard head....so if you feel the difference, don't get alarmed.<br /><br />And the telltale water will be cold....as it's just coming from the pump.

Thanks OBJ. Like I said I haven't had any alarms. Thanks for the info. I have read some of the horror stories about heat/thermostats/replacing. I will check your method right away so my mind will be at ease. Keep up the good work. We all appreciate your help. ***My manual is getting dog-eared and greasy****

That's OK Bill...I like seeing a dogeared greasy manual.....means it's getting some use.....
