Re: thermostats

Follow the hoses from both cylinder heads to the housing just below the exhaust baffle plate (the large rectangular plate between the heads).

There are two thermostats and two spring loaded water bypass valve assemblies within that housing.

Re: thermostats

I remove the cover under the bottom pan, and come up from underneath with a good-fitting 6-point box wrench (SnapOn 7/16" OSH14). It's still tough on the bubblebacks. Any advice/experience with what thermostats (materials, brand names) last the longest in salt would be appreciated.

Re: thermostats

Ditto ledgefinder on his technique. It's tedious, but it can be done. Better than drilling holes, IMHO.

Use the OEM parts. They had a vested interest in making sure they lasted.

Re: thermostats

i got the housing out bud i cant put it back in because of the springs. there is no space to get the housing in straight to push the springs in.

Re: thermostats

reeldutch,

Congrats! Sounds like you got it.

Get a new gasket, also pick up a small jar of OMC gasket sealing compound-not expensive. It's messy, but worth it.

Re: thermostats

Ditto on the OEM thermostats. I get several years on my saltwater '90 V-4 with OMC parts, but only 1 with aftermarkets. OMC's are stainless steel and the others are brass. They're too much trouble to change not to go with the best. BTW, a fresh water flush after each trip will make them last much longer.

Re: thermostats

treu i had stainless in and i run trouble free for 3 saltwater seasons (flushed every trip with fresh H2O)
but i hear all kind of horror storys that after a few years the 3 bolds get stuck and might break.
so i choose the anual thermostat maintence.
because a broken bolt in that spot is gonna cost mega bucks to get out. and every 3 years i do a waterpump.

reel dutch

Re: thermostats

I did mine last year. I assembled everything and held them together with rubber bands. When I had the three cover bolts started I clipped the rubber bands - worked for me - don't know how the "pros" do it.
