I'm looking at a 2003 Chaparral 320. The outdrives are listed on the survey as Volvo Pentas - Model DP-SM1.7 - serials 4202065055 and 4202063886.

These aren't the dreaded XDPs are they? Am I safe with these drives?

According to the model name "DP" and a quick seach on volvo penta to verify serials nos., no these are not the defunk XDP. XDPs had a composite almost plastic like exterior. You can read multiple reviews on the standard duo-props on the site. IMHO, they are a great drive.

from what i can tell, that is the same outdrive i have. it is the duoprop cast housing unit. not the poly housing that you need to stay away from. From what i have read, these are almost bulletproof.

The XDP drives have a model name like "XDP-B". That Chaparral has the traditional DP drives which you will like as long as they were properly maintained.
