I plan on looking at a boat about 3 hours away and out of state later in the week. I'm in Washington and the Boat is in Oregon. Oregon has no sales tax. I'm buying the boat from a private sale. He has the all the paperwork for the boat and trailer. I plan on taking a bill of sale with me. Anything else that I need to know or take with me to close on the boat deal? I don't want to make 2 trips to have the guy sign more paperwork.

Check out the status of boat, motor, trailer title in both states, and requirements for transfer at home.

Also, you might as well plan on paying sales tax when you bring it home if your state has sales tax.

hope it helps

Very few, if any states have "sales tax" on boats or vehicles, however they do charge TITLE TAX. This will be paid to the sate in which you title the boat, not the state in which the sale takes place. Title Tax is charged on the VALUE of the boat. This may be established by the Bill of Sale or by other means - see the Tax Scam thread. Make sure that the owner has CLEAR title to the boat. There should either be no liens recorded on the title or the owner has a "Security of Interest Filing" attached to the title that releases any liens. The owner should sign the title on the back, which releases the title to you and allows you to re-title the boat in your name.
Good luck.

Check with WaDMV before you go. You may need to have a HIN check by a state inspector. I know those (VIN checks) are required for cars coming into WA from out of state.

When I bought a CA boat/trailer and registered it in NV I had to go down to the NV Dept of Taxation (fun 2 hour experience) to pay sales tax on the purchase since I bought it from a dealer. If I had purchased it from a private party I wouldn't have had to pay the sales tax.

When I registered the boat with NV DG&F I didn't have to haul the boat down to their office for a HIN inspection since it had a 12 digit HIN, if it didn't have a 12 digit HIN I would have had to taken it in for an inspection. NV DMV required a VIN inspection for all out of state title transfers.

It's different between states, so you are best off to call your local DMV and Fish & Game offices, I know it saved me time and aggravation.

I bought my boat in Minnesota from a private party and had to pay sales tax on the total purchase plus title and licensing fees for the trailer at the Department of Motor Vehicles and registration fees to the Department of Natural Resources. In Wisconsin the tax you pay is based on the county that you live in. As mentioned in the above posts, your experience may vary as each state dreams up their own complicated way of collecting every penny possible from their residents.
The Washington DMV website explains what you will need for an out of state boat to be registered in Washington.
