Think I've narrowed it down to timer base

'89 Evinrude XP150 (E150STLCEM). No spark now, and a history of erratic spark loss on random cylinders. Good charge coil output when cranking (at least 275 volts both sides), and still no spark when red engine harness disconnected. Sensor coil resistance very high from white to purple wires - around 8 MegaOhms white to port purple wire, and around 6 MegaOhms white to starboard purple wire. Using Fluke 87 and Stevens PVA-1 adapter, I get no output voltage between the white wire on port timer base connector and any of the six blue, green or purple wires. I'm ready to order a new timer base, but just wanted to check to make sure everyone thinks I'm on the right track? I'm getting very anxious to get this rig back in the water - thanks so much for your help!!! ;)

Re: Think I've narrowed it down to timer base

Well, still no replies to this.

I'm being optimistic that my new timer base will arrive today, and I've already removed the stator and old timer base. With any luck, I'll get the new one installed and get it all back together sometime this weekend. Anybody want to place any bets on whether I'll have spark or not? If not, I'll probably be replacing the powerpack next.

Hey farginice
It looks like we have the same problem. Replaceing the power pack did not fix my troubles. I am tackeing mine back to the dealer and will let you know what they find as soon as I can. Clymers says the reading should be between 430-530 ohms for the stator

Too bad we don't live closer so we could swap parts to figure out what's bad and what's not! The new timer base took me from no spark on any cylinders to good, hot spark on the top two starboard cylinders, but that's it. I was in a hurry, so haven't had a chance to check for good timer base output on all six sensor coils yet. I'm guessing I'm going to need a power pack too.
