Re: Thinking about a Tohatsu ?

Hi,
Found a boat magazine that tested the Tohatsu 50 2-stroke (test made in 2001). It was one of the largest boat magazine here in Sweden, "Vi Båtägare" (Boat owner's), that tested this outboard.

Some basic spec:
3 cyl/3 carburators, 20" (in test), Electric start, 67,5 kg, cyl vol 697 cc, recommended RPM range at WOT 5000-5700, CDI ignition, 12 volt/130 Watt generator, gear ratio 1,85:1, Power trim.
Construction from 1992.

Test on boat "Theri Big Fun" (4,7 m x 1,85 m, 280 Kg without outboard, max 5 persons (test with 2 and 4 persons onboard).
Tested with GPS and fuelflow meter, acceleration with manual stop watch, noise with a dB meter at drivers seat.

Tohatsu 50 and Tohatsu 50 Orbital (DI) compared:

SPEED

2 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
Max RPM (5900): 29 knots
Minus 500 rpm: 26,5 knots
Minus 1000 rmp: 24 knots
Minus 1500 rpm: 21 knots
Minus 2000 rpm: 18 knots

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
Max RPM (6000): 30 knots
Minus 500 rpm: 26 knots
Minus 1000 rmp: 24 knots
Minus 1500 rpm: 21 knots
Minus 2000 rpm: 17,5 knots

4 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
Max RPM (5900): 27,5 knots
Minus 500 rpm: 24,5 knots
Minus 1000 rmp: 22 knots
Minus 1500 rpm: 19 knots
Minus 2000 rpm: 15 knots

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
Max RPM (6000): 27,5 knots
Minus 500 rpm: 25 knots
Minus 1000 rmp: 22 knots
Minus 1500 rpm: 19 knots
Minus 2000 rpm: 15 knots

FUEL CONSUMPTION

2 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
12 knots: 0,70 Liter/nautical mile
20 knots: 0,50
24 knots: 0,55
27 knots: 0,65
WOT: 0,73

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
12 knots: 0,53 Liter/nautical mile
20 knots: 0,42
24 knots: 0,47
27 knots: 0,56
WOT: 0,64

4 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
12 knots: 0,78 Liter/nautical mile
20 knots: 0,53
24 knots: 0,62
27 knots: 0,74
WOT: 0,78

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
12 knots: 0,64 Liter/nautical mile
20 knots: 0,46
24 knots: 0,52
27 knots: 0,67
WOT: 0,70

NOICE LEVELS

Tohatsu 50
Idle: 61 dB
12 knots: 73
20 knots: 78
24 knots: 85
27 knots: 87
WOT: 90

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
Idle: 60 dB
12 knots: 72
20 knots: 77
24 knots: 83
27 knots: 87
WOT: 90

ACCELERATION

2 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
0-20 knots: 6,5 sek
0-25 knots: 8,9
20-25 knots: 2,5

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
0-20 knots: 6,7
0-25 knots: 9,1
20-25 knots: 2,3

4 persons onboard

Tohatsu 50
0-20 knots: 8,1 sek
0-25 knots: 12,5
20-25 knots: 4,3

Tohatsu 50 Orb.
0-20 knots: 8,5 sek
0-25 knots: 13,1
20-25 knots: 4,4

So the Tohatsu 50 is by no surprise more thirsty on fuel and more noisy than the Tohatsu 50 Orbital. But the Tohatsu 50 is much cheaper to buy and is fast and has good acceleration.

Re: Thinking about a Tohatsu ?

The Yamaha F50 compared to Tohatsu 50 would in my personal view be in favor of the Yamaha.
Quieter, lower fuel consumption, less smoke at start and less fuel smell while using it, probably slightly better second hand value if You sell it some time in future. On the other hand more complicated mechanicaly but still servicable by an ordinary user.

I have a Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself and like it alot (had a Suzuki 2-stroke before).

The only reason I bought a "stink boat" after years of sailing boats is because of the proliferation of the four-stroke... I simply couldn't live with a two-stroke and its environmental issues. But that's me... either way, it sounds like you can't go wrong.

Here's something to think about. The only outboard manufacturer that has NEVER had to issue a recall is Tohatsu. Either they are very lucky or are very good or both.

I know I just jinxed it and that they will now have the mother of all recalls!

Re: Thinking about a Tohatsu ?

I have a 40 horse 2 stroke nissan and a friend of mine bought a 30 horse 4 stroke nissan at same time. Both seem like good engines, start easy, run well, power trim works fine. Talking with my friend we both thought they ran along ways on the fuel used. The price was very good. No negative's to buy this brand. Dealers are near by for service in this location. Good luck!!

Re: Thinking about a Tohatsu ?

I have to utter an enthusiastic thumb's up to Nissan/ Tohatsu as well. I own a Nissan 50 TLDI and purchased it against the advice of several of my Yamaha and Merc buddies (brand loyalty does run deep). I was torn between a Evinrude 50 E-tec, or the Nissan 50 TLDI and what sold me on the Nissan/ Tohatsu was the fact that it had been out for a couple of years (with no recalls or major problems) and it was a 3 cylinder (vs. a 2 cylinder E-tec Rude). Then it came to dollars....the Nissan was dramaticly cheaper than the Evinrude. I must say, that after one season of hard use, I couldn't be happier. It is fairly quiet (not as quiet as I have seen & heard E-tecs run), uses very little fuel, is very light, and performs great. I run Klotz synthetic oil in it, (it runs very clean)and have never even noticed any 2 stroke smell. I can idle it and troll with it all day without a problem.

I just can't say enough positive about this outboard. I am lucky to have a couple of great dealers close by, and they were immensely helpful when we set this motor up on my '04 16' Smokercraft Stinger.
