Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying my first non project boat and I just wanted to see what you guys think about it. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow. It is listed at $10,600 but I was going to offer $9,000 and see where it goes. What are some things I should check when I go to look at it? I know the soft spot on the floor likely means the floor and possibly stringers will need to be replaced at some point. Thanks for all your help!! :)

ok.......where do i start.....

to quote tashasdaddy

there is no such thing as a bad boat....just a bad owner......and that boat had a bad owner......its an 03 with a soft deck and cracked uph......that means the doat was left uncovered......its in texas.....but that doesnt mean it lived in texas....

it is not nessaraly a project boat this year......but the soft deck means it will be in 2 years.

IMO, that's a ton of money for a boat that you already know has structural issues. You should be able to find a 10-year-old one in GREAT condition for near that price. I wouldn't waste my time.

agreed, for 9K you can do way better....if thats how he took care of the outside, how well did he take care of the engine?

I don't know....if there is a bad brand Tahoe is one of them. They are cheaply built. A 2003 with a soft deck? Neglected or not, in this day and age it should take longer than that for any boat to have a soft deck.

Do yourself a huge favor and take it out of consideration. I won't even mention that the fact it is Tahoe plays into part of my suggestion but with a soft spot...no way. If you must have it offer them 3k for it and consider it a project.

Ok well I trust you guys allot more than I do myself so I wont even look at this one. Thanks for the help and for saving my time and money! :)

what about this one? http://www.dfwboats.com/site_page_254/item_613132.html?listing_page=listing_sum_index_1.html

Much better choice.....nice if you could knock some dollars off of it. And of course make sure everything is in order but I think thats worth putting on the short list.

Now you're talking. Definitely worth a closer look, at least.

That does look like a nice boat!

Surprised, though, that it's sitting on a tandem axle trailer.

I'd jump on that Chapparal if I were you. You won't find many boats as well built as a Chap for 9K, and in awesome condition. Don't let the age fool you, the Chap looks to be in better condition than the Tahoe even being 9 years older.

The Chap is way better than the Tahoe much more storage, three coolers and all around a much better boat. I would consider looking at it. I am glad I didn't buy some the Bayliners or Sea Rays I looked before I found the Chaparral. I really enjoy my 1994 1930SST Chap. I bought mine for $7,000 back in Oct. of 2007 but the engine needed a little work about $1,000 worth but everything else was in great shape.

Not sure why a tamdem trailer my 19' came stock with a single axle.

My advice would be take someone with you that has worked on boats for years and knows and ends and out of them.

Keep looking. You have now learned the first lesson. A well looked after 16 year old boat is better and worth more than a poorly maintained 7 year old boat.
