Thinking about vertglas

I am considering using vertglas (or similar) on my boat and have a few questions. Does anyone have a preference on which brand to use? I have a dark grey metal flake boat and the finish currently feels like sandpaper. Is it too far gone for these types of products? Also, is it safe to carefully apply it around the carpet line, or do I need to remove the carpet to prevent damage? Thanks for the advice.

No, No, No, a thousand times No.. These co-polymer, acrilic urethane clear coat products are a joke.. 6 months to a year, you'll wish you had'nt ever heard of the stuff.. ;) Rant over with! :D <br /><br />Meguires, 3M, and 303 are the only boat or vehicle care products that belong on anything you value.. My own opinion, of course..<br /><br />Anyway Lazydawg.. If you can feel the metal flakes then its way past what the stuff's "supposed/advertized" to do, and if you did apply it, it may cause serious adhesion problems if you decided to clear coat the boat to restore the gelcoat in the future...

Hummmm. Six months to a year huh? I've got seven months on my Vertglas treated black hull now, and it still looks good. What's in store for me?<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Snapperbait, thanks for the response. I was afraid mine was too far gone. I guess my only option is to deal with it until I can get it re-coated. Is there any potential for damage leaving it for a while as it is? I do have to admit that I was surprised by your strong negative opinions of these types of products. Most of the previous posts were approving of them. I'm glad I posted the question and got more information. Thanks for the responses.

No. I have not used Vertglas brand, but I have used another (can't remember the brand name) that used a similar process and claimed the same things as vertglas.. <br /><br />This is straight from vertglas: <br />" The next season, just wash your boat and apply another two coats of Color Restorer/Sealer to refresh the shine." yup.. You'll have to spend another $60-100 bucks for a kit to put the stuff on again next year.. Or, you could buff the boat out with a machine and wax it with good quality products with the same or better results for $40-60 bucks less, maybe a little more elbow grease.....<br /><br />I put similar stuff on a lite blue van at the request of my mom... About 3 months it started to show streaks from the brush applicator thingy.. 6-8 months later after it turned to a chalky, flakey crud, I was back removing the crap with my trusty buffer and a ton of 3-M HD compound... It ain't easy to remove, at all.. <br /><br />Van looked better buffed out and waxed anyway.. Lesson learned, if it sound too good to be true, probably is... <br /><br />To those of you who used it, If it works for you , Great! I'm happy for you. :) It did'nt for me..
