Thinking of a re-power.......your thoughts?

I've only had my Holiday for about 3 or 4 weeks now, and I've taken it joy riding across the lake, fishing, and attempted skiing with it. It doesn't quite have the performance I expected, and can't pull me out of the water (6'3, 240lbs) on 2 skis, let alone a wakeboard. My wife and I have agreed to throw a little bit of money into this thing for the next few years until we are all comfortable with the basics of boating and our skiing prowess improves, kids included. So here's the million dollar question, if it were your boat and your money ($2k-ish), how would you spend it? I'm only looking at power plants right now. Everything is covered or accounted for. If memory serves me correct, the hull is rated for up to 120hp O/B. Thanks

ps....One of my good friends would like to come play with us on the water. He's 6'10 and 340lbs.

If I understand, you currently have a 100 hp OB on that boat and it cannot get you up?
I would look at getting the motor running correctly, I believe that much motor should not have a problem unless boat is overloaded with other things. Check things out......

I agree. It may be as simple as a lower pitched prop for skiing. The boat I learned to ski on was a heavy FG tri-hull with a 90hp Chrysler OB. We had two props, one for cruising and one for skiing. The skiing prop was 2" less in pitch and made a HUGE difference.

My dad always tells the story of back in the day skiing behind an old aluminum boat with a 30hp. He says it'd pull up a skiier with 4 guys in the boat with the right prop.

I've got 2 props for it, a 12.5x16 (32mph @ 5500) and a 12x14 (30mph @ 5800). When I tried skiing, we had 2 adults and 2 kids in the boat (with me in the water), with the 16p installed. All I did was push, could never get out and on top. I'm hoping to get out again within the next week, so I'll try the 14p next time. The 100-s is getting full timing advance, has new plugs, SeaFoam'd, and 100x4 compression. I dont know what else to check. I figured a newer (true) 115 or 120 might do it for me, but are hard to find in my area. My local marina usually has 70-90hp units. He wants $1500-ish installed for a mid-80's/early 90's 90hp.

How long is the Holiday??? You sure do not want less HP. I have a 22 holiday with a 200 O/B and I know getting you out of the water would be a snap. But thats a lot of HP. A 115 or 150 would be nice for you. ) depends on the size of the boat. OR You need smaller friends .LOL Just kidding . If your motor is good getting the pitch right you should be ok. I have a 14.5 x 19 pitch and use it for every thing .

This is a '66 Holiday 18ft, with the original 100hp Evinrude. I know that back in the day, the hp ratings were at the crank, so at "best," I might be getting 80hp to the prop. Given the age, though, I doubt it. I would think that 200hp would yank my arms out of their sockets. In highschool, I wakeboarded behind my mom's 15ft tri-hull and 85hp Merc. It was a chore, but it would pull me up within 5miles of WOT. My thought with the re-power was that I would step up to a larger O/B that was prop-rated, was easier and cheaper to find replacement parts for it, and would satisfy our performance needs when wanting to tube/ski behind it. As it is right now, its fine for fishing and tubing. However, my wife and I would like to re-live our glory days behind this boat. We can't justify spending much more and possibly taking on someone else's problems, so we'll put it into what we have now. Who knows, we may end up keeping the dumb thing for quite awhile if it does everything we'd like it to do.

By the way, we used to live in Anacortes and Glenhaven, just down the road from you.

I think an '83ish or newer 115 would do ya.

That was my thoughts, as well. What kind of price do they go for with controls?

I've only had the boat out on Lake Lowell so far, but wouldn't mind getting up to Hell's Canyon. If you know the area, I'm just a short hop from the Flying J exit in Caldwell.

Look for a junk FG boat w/ motor. Last year I picked up a 74' 135 hp evinrude on a junk Larson with a trailer for $350.00. This is a great time of year to find deals.

A few years back when the kids were home we had an 18 starcraft bowrider with a 70 hp jonny and were able to pop up two skiers at a time. Something else is up with your combo or and please do not take offense...perhaps you are doing something wrong in getting up. Sounds like you need a smaller pitch prop. Good luck

First off, I'd say you might need a 4-stroke motor; pretty sure that Evinrude's a 2-stroke.

Re: Thinking of a re-power.......your thoughts?

Its been about 20yrs since I've been pulled by a boat, so I have no technique. However, its not that I'm almost up and falling over, I never get that far. I'm tucking my legs, allowing the boat to get tension on the rope, leaning back, and being drug because there just isn't enough low end. I'll try the other prop next weekend and report back then. I'm not in the position to pick up another boat right now, but I've noticed that I can buy a complete package for much less than just the O/B alone. If I go this route and do it myself, it might not be a bad idea to rent cherry-picker for an afternoon to help with a swap. I will stick with 2-stroke for the weight savings and ease of maintenance. I've already got a high-strung 4-stroke in the garage that takes up much of my time (CRF450R).

Have you done a compression test on this motor. It could be that your motor just have enough guts left in it.

Re: Thinking of a re-power.......your thoughts?

But I'm also looking for a higher top speed, too. I've already got a prop that will (hopefully) yank us out. I'm just considering the age of the current O/B combined with what I want the boat to do. That is why I'm looking at a re-power.
