Thinking of buying 81 VIP may have motor issues

I am going to look at a boat for a friend. Boat is in excellent shape interior has been redone and had a complete transom service.. My question is that the owner says that it smokes after it has run a while. What could be the issues here. Only wanting $1000 for the boat just wondering if it is worth it.. I will probably be the one helping him with it so dont want to bite off more than we can chew.
