Hey all, I’m considering picking up a non running 1984 70hp Johnson. I’m assuming the year based on its hood or cover but I believe these hoods are interchangeable through the years(?)

in any case, I’m hoping for advice.
This motor has prop damage and a sheared off skeg so I know I’m welding on a new one and replacing seals or searching for another lower unit.

The owner claims it “turns over freely”. I want to do a compression test but the wiring is disconnected so im assuming I’ll have to turn over by rope pulls?

I’ve told the owner that I can only offer him scrap rate
In case it’s a total basket case, but I don’t know if even that is a risky. Are parts readily available for these?

use a set of jumper cables to turn it over.

scrap rate is .30/# for just the aluminum

Lots of these motors were sold.-----Lots of parts available.-----Takes time and have to know where to look.-----E-bay is one place.

Thanks guys.
scott Danforth, do you mean clamping booster cables on to each power lead and it will turn over, or will I have to monkey with other wiring in the harness?

No, connect one cable between the engine block to the Negative on the Battery, Touching a cable connected to the Battery's Positive to the downside of the Solenoid, or to the cable connector on the Starter
