Thinking of Scuppers. Advice and sanity check needed.

Seeing I am entering the world of transom and deck replacement, I am also thinking of a couple upgrades. Boat is a 1984 Starcraft Islander with a 3.0 L Mercruiser. I do plan on fishing a lot with this boat in salt water. My thoughts are to add scuppers and a wash down to rid the blood and guts.

Any ideas on how to do this? Anyone want to talk me out of this, I may need a sanity check for this one?

Sorry but I am not in the "Starmada". I'll bump this to EZ, et al. :)

I love Starcraft Islanders...but that is a crazy idea.

The hull is not big enough to warrant or make it feasible to install scuppers into the design.

The deck would have to be 100% waterproof, which is tough on an aluminum hull.

Also the waterline would be dangerously close to the scupper on the stern, making it likely that it would take on water as well as shed excess water from the cockpit.

I like the idea of scuppers...but not on this type of boat. Fiberglass is normally required to do this is my understanding.

Great thought...well worth discussing. Welcome to the site, Starcrafts have a huge following here. Post up some photos of the rig if you get a chance. The Starcraft owners forum here is quite active.:D

Hello Reming..and Welcome to Iboats..

What about " Starboard " inlayed and hinged into your side cockpit for Combing/Step boards ?

The Mod would be kinda EZ ;) .

It's funny that you posted this up, this very mod crossed my mind the other day when I was doing some plotting and scheming on my little project.

All the same, I would completely agree with everything my buddy Huron said up there.

Yah, it's just not reasonable.

Hey how about some info and photos of your rig man? We'd love to check it out!:D

Cheers!

Without scuppers where does your deck drain to?

On my 16' rig there are no scuppers, the deck drains into the bilge, over the sides, thru the ski locker, or at the stern where the deck ends.

The only real scuppers would be in my splashwell, to shed water from a following sea.

Thanks Huron Angler....never knew of many boats without scuppers. The deck is below the waterline? I'm sure Starcraft knows what they are doing, especially after seeing their loyal following.

How about installing scuppers and have them drain into sump box with a bilge pump and float switch to pump the deck water overboard.....I'm learnin'.

I may have to get one so I can join the club.

Re: Thinking of Scuppers. Advice and sanity check needed.

This boat was designed for the Great Lakes. There must be someone out there who has thought this out further. I am pretty sure the deck is above the water line so why worry about the scuppers? When I redo the deck I would make it pretty tight and then put a lip around the motor housing. The ball type scupper seems like it would fit well.

My reasoning for this is to handle the washdown. I would like to just washdown the blood and guts. If I just wash it to the bilge I will have too many problems withthe bilge pump.

What about a macerator pump in the bilge instead and then place the current bilge pump in a secondary position to back it up.

Still haven't been talked out of this idea yet.

Here are some pics of the boat last year before I purchased it. They don't tell a lot but its all I got right now.
BTW: These are only for the picture junkies. I have noticed a lot of people need this fix. Use it wisely!!!

Ayuh,... I've got a 74 Islander...

The Decks of Islanders are well Below the waterline, by Several Inches....

I hose down with a gallon bucket, 'n let the bilgepump send it overboard...

That 3.0 liter in that set-up sips gas. My last trip of the summer was out to what we call the half-hump off the Mass Coast. Approx 15-miles off shore. Seas were flat on the way out and 4-footers on the way back in. Went through about a 15 gallons for the whole day bouncing around to different spots. No need for the diesel. I do need to find the power loss I have though. Just to get me going I installed an 16x11P prop. The 13x15P that was on barely planed. If you read my other posts I have been through the ringer looking for this problem and still can't find it. The previous owner(s) have cared little for her over the years and I am slowly bringing her back.

I have confirmed the deck is below the water line. Done deal...No more talk about scuppers!!! I have been talked out of it, thank you for the wise advice.

How about the macerator pump in the bilge?

Huron - I agree, I am also a fan. I drove 10-hours to pick this up by Lake Erie. Its the 196 Islander. From what I gather its only 19 1/2 feet. I haven't measured it. The walls are high in it, which is what I enjoy. She's big enough to go off shore 20 miles and small enough to go tubing in the local lakes. 4-footers are my limit though.

Ayuh,... Without digging up your other posts,...

I'd say it's got the Wrong outdrive on it....
It Should have a 1.98:1 gear ratio,...
My Guess is, it's got a 1.50:1 on it...

Remi,

Very nice boat. I am definitely going to start looking for one of these when I finish my current project. You guys have really sold me on the "tinny" thing. I have to get some use out my 17'er first.

The macerator pump idea is fine but it may not grind up harder or rubbery materials like scales, bones and guts. Also they are on the low end of flow rate.

Its 1.98:1 ratio. I marked the shaft and hand cranked the motor while counting the revolutions on the prop shaft.

I am leaning towards wet foam or exhaust?? Only places I have yet to confirm.
