Thinking of trading to a bigger boat

Hi, I bought a 2002 Robalo R235 last year, which I really love, but it is a little too small when fishing with 3+ people. I was looking at a 2001 Grady White 30 Marlin that has a pair of Yamaha OX 66 250s for $44k. I emailed a few questions to the dealer, and he replied that there is no way of telling the hours on the engines as no meter has ever been hooked up (but the compression is excellent), and that there was some water intrusion on the port side of the hull, which has since been professionally fixed. After doing some research, I guess the meter thing is not as big a deal as I first thought, but the water intrusion might be cause for concern???

'water intrusion' could mean a lot of things, so I would take a look and find out more about the actual problem and the repair.

I think you have to qualify what that means. Does it mean that seal around a hatch went bad and some water leaked in to the hull or the last owner was doing 30mph in reverse with a beer in his hands said watch this to his friends and impailled the hull on the dock and the insurance company made it better with the lowest bidder....

Their (Bosun's) Mashpee location used to be a Formula dealer where I would get a part or 2 . . .

Funny how it says Yamaha O/Bs and then say it's a dual I/O under engine type.

typical . . . that is why you have to go see the boats.

I talked to the Dealer, the water intrusion was found during a survey. The screws on or under the rub rail had been letting water in. I guess GWs have two pieces of fiberglass with a piece of balsa wood between them, and the balsa wood had been acting as a sponge. It was professionally fixed by removing a portion of the outer fiberglass, replacing the wood, then sealed back up. Would that process weaken the hull?

Is this on the transom or the side of the hull ??

if done properly, should be OK. . . But for $40k what else do you have to look at?

On the port side of the hull.

Not really looking at anything else yet, I was only thinking about a bigger boat and the next thing you know I am talking to a dealer!! I looked at a 99 GW 27 Sailfish at the end of last year 99 Grady White, but that had too many issues and didn't really look well cared for....

I looked at the boat, can't even see where the repair was done, very professional. I have a boat survey planned for next thursday...

The bigger Gradys' are cored above the water line. If it was professional repaired, I wouldn't worry about it.

I would be concerned about the motors. Boats like that don't sit in the marina, they get used and 13 year old motors would have a ton of hours on them. Internal corrosion is a distinct possibility on motors that old. The OX are known for issues with the O2 sensors and the VST. When was the last time these systems where serviced?

If I where looking at purchasing the boat I’d figure the cost of new motors into the equation.
