This boat is a piece of junk!

Just sharing a funny story I thought some might like. A few years back, a good friend of mine bought an older bayliner. Decent boat but he knew nothing about boats. He owned it for 2 or 3 years and hated it the whole time. He almost never was able to get it started. Usually it just cranked and cranked until the battery was dead. Sometimes it would fire and die right away. A few times he had a truck parked in the water with jumper cables and would just hammer on the starter. Sometimes he would get it to go and it would be great once it warmed up. So he decides hes done with the headache and goes to sell it. Some guy comes over to look at it. My buddy tells him it probably wont start but once it does it runs great but we can try anyway. So the guy hops in, pushes in the button on the throttle lever and advances the throttle and it fires right up! My buddy just looks at him and says "son of a -----". Nobody ever told him how to advance throttle it! He ran into the guy a couple years later and he said the boat runs great and starts right up for him. Hows that for a kick in the beans?!

Sounds like a buddy of mine who bought a Galaxy 17 br and new nothing.
I stopped over to take a look at a problem he was having and found out he only lifted the outdrive part way, didn't know about the trailer switch to raise the rest of the way.
By the way he had towed to a local lake about 10 miles away about 6 times.

I once watched a guy turn off a PWC so his buddy would not get cut by the prop climbing on it (one guy was on it already). They proceeded to sink the thing when this quarterback looking college guy could not climb on the thing. Half hour later I went over and got it started for him since a dealer had let him use this demo as a favor, and he was going to leave it all weekend with the motor full of water. He was a nice guy and knew nothing about boats, his buddy was brain dead or something.

Reminds me of me
Still remember almost giving away my first boat because it would just not start for me, it started right up for the PO while he was selling it to me
I had no idea the key had to pushed in to "choke" it till i asked a buddy to try it & noticed he was doing something different with the key :p

Hey Boss Hawg, glad I'm not the only one! Had a small pontoon with a 30 hp Evinrude. It would crank and crank and crank before it would start. A guy I ran into (he owns his own boat repair business) heard me doing it and told me about pushing in the key to choke it. Cold started the first time every time after that! :D

Since the proliferation of fuel injected cars the automotive world has been training "new" drivers how NOT to start a carbureted engine for 20+ years now, and it shows in the boating world :D

When I first bought my Bayliner, the glove box was locked and, as it was new to me, I was dying to know what might be locked in the box. I actually had the ket for it, but it seemed frozen shut, so I began using a screwdriver to pry it open. As I jostled it around trying to pry it open it suddenly popped open in my hands. Come to find out it opens by pressing the locking button. Certainly a short-bus moment.

Well I guess we got lucky as the dealer we bought our boat from had one of their service techs show us:

Proper use of muffs
Max rpm on muffs
Use of kill switch lanyard
Tilt/trim operation
Priming before starting
Proper use of all instrument panel accessories
LOCATION and USE of the PLUG
LOCATION and PROPER USE of the GAS TANK FILL HOSE
Proper hitching and CHECKING the hitch
Proper use of transom straps and safety chain
Proper shifting technique
Provided a list of proper fluids and frequency of changes
Questioned me about how I planned to launch and retrieve and liked my plan

After about an hour which included a verbal test to see how much information had been retained we were on our way and have been enjoying ever since.

It could have been A LOT different without that instruction.

That is wonderful they did that for you. I asked the local Bass Pro marine sales lady if they would do a water test and basically go over the entire boat and operation with me if I bought one of their Tahoes. She said the service manager does this with everyone who buys one of these if asked. They even go with you to launch it and ride in it with you to get you familiar with it. I thought that was pretty cool of them.

Re: This boat/motor is a piece of junk!

I sold a Chrysler 55hp and rigged it on a guy's boat in the mid 70's. The owner said that he knew how to operate the motor so I thought everything would be fine.

Two days later he was back with the boat and said that the motor ran great but he was disappointed with the speed and he could swim faster...

I went outside to take a look at the motor and noticed right off that the cold start lever on the control box was sticking straight up. After pushing it down and checking that the controls worked correctly I asked him to show me what he was doing to make the boat go.

He put the motor in gear and then raised the cold start to increase the rpm, no wonder that he could swim faster than the boat would go. I gave him a quick lesson and he took off to the boat ramp. Two hours later he was back but this time he had a big grin and proclaimed that the boat went so fast it was scary.

As he was getting back in his truck I reminded him that he didn't have to use all the throttle all the time just because it's there.
After all, who drives their car everywhere at wide open throttle?

Heh I don't drive my car WOT all the time, but I sure do with Jet ski's ;)

rolled my buddies brand new 1200 at about 65mph LOL now that was funny... flew off, bounced across the water a few times, lost my shorts, lake water enema, and everything... he stopped laughing long enough to tell me that there are more speed options than Idle and WOT. :D

At least he was good about it. If it had been mine I probably would have been peeved.

Re: This boat is a piece of junk!

I sold a boat to my brother-in-law-he couldn't wait for me to put it in the water,so he took along a buddy who"knows all about boats". So I get a call,"hey, this boat is at full throttle and barely moves. I told him put the fast idle [chrome lever] down, then push the throttle[big lever] all the way forward.
I didn't know he was at the controls-boat running- as we spoke. I'll never forget his yelling "YAHOOO,WE'RE GOING NOW BRO!!!"
Glad he was pointed toward open water at the time.

Confused... does "wide open throttle" mean WOT. You all need to get your language straight. The new guys don't know what "wide open throttle" means.

Re: This boat is a piece of junk!

PWC are jet boats and have an impeller inside, no prop like a normal boat. Also the bilge pump runs with the motor so when you turn it off, it can fill with water.

WOT is wide open throttle.
