This could have ended poorly

Noticed this a few minutes ago - tpms retaining nut seems about ready to crack in half and fall off. That would be fun on a front tire at 65MPH. Guess I should pop the spare on, not worth chancing the run to the tire shop with it like that.

With a sharp eye like that I wonder why your wheels are so dirty ? :D

One more reason I like my TPMS on the band around the inside of the wheel. If it breaks, it just stays inside the tire, lol. Good catch.

oldjeep, is this system in your RAM? I have a '12 RAM 3/4 ton, hemi, crew cab(I only have 383hp and 400 torque, you got me in both categories) that has that tpms system. After looking at your post, I went to check on my set up. I just have a normal looking valve. Couldn't figure out how it works. Then I read hauln's reply. I wonder if it works the same way? Although, how does it give a signal for the readout in the dash?

Just a note: the 04-08 F-150's use the steel bands on the inside of the wheel to mount the TPMS as I mentioned. The 09+ F-150's went to the valve-stem TPMS sensors like pictured above. I have no idea why the change was made, other than the ease of swapping the TPMS to a new set of wheels (which would be a pointless change from an OEM perspective).

Yes, it is in my ram. Not all of the tpms look the same way, some look like a normal valve stem. The 17's had this system and the 20's had another type in the 1500's

Good eye oldjeep. There are lots of people who wouldn't have seen that until it was to late. Good Job

Yeah, I'm runnin' 17s. I want to buy different rims for plowing and run different tires. If I don't use a tpms on the new rims will I constantly have error messages, lights going of in the dash? Can tpms be added to the new rims? Any idea on cost? I've never had tpms before, so this is all new to me. I hear when the air pressure drops in cold weather dash alerts are triggered...... Hope this doesn't turn into a pain in the rectum. Any help is appreciated......

If you do not have TPMS senders in the tires then the tire light will always be on and the truck will ding every time you start it. You can buy senders for your new wheels somewhere between $70-$150 for a set of 4. When the air pressure drops then the tire light comes on and dings. Good reminder to run a bit more pressure in the winter. I think mine has only gone off twice in 3 years.

Also remember that most sensors have a preset low pressure limit, so if you run higher pressures, it won't be as likely to get triggered in cold weather. I believe mine were set to trigger around 28psi, I run 50psi and have never had them trigger without a nail being in the tire causing a legitimate warning light/message.

My dodge reports both over and under pressure. If you switch to a different tire rating then you need to bring it to the dealer to use starscan to reset the high/low values.

Ok since there are so many TPMS experts here. I got an 05 Expedition that originally had band type sensors. I picked up a set of take-offs with new tires on craigslist from a guy with a new expy that has valve stem sensors. Of course my light is on. Any way to get them reprogrammed to work with my expy

Yes, I believe they work on the same frequency as the band-style. I'm not sure if there's a manual "linking" procedure you can do yourself, but the dealership could do it for sure.

Talk to your dealer, it looks like there is some sort of training that has to be done on an 05 when introducing new sensors. Tirerack sells a "training" magnet for use with the 05's

Re: This could have ended poorly

Thanks for the help oldjeep and hauln'. In the winter I'll be maxing out the psi at 80. Right now they're set to 60 and 70psi. The summer/winter tires I'll be using are rated the same..
