Engine: '82 70HP Merc T/bolt ign.

I've tried sorting my engine over the w/end which suffers a re-occurring problem, Fuel starvation
I removed the entire fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump and replaced it with continous pipe to hopefully eliminate air leaks and started the engine. At idle its fine and the fuel filter contains just a small amount of fuel. Then when I switch the engine off, fuel syphons back into the fuel filter to about half full
Any ideas guys??

Clams: I haven't backed off the idle 1/2 a turn just yet! When cold the engine idles at 1,500 is that normal

Anybody know the flow rate of this particular fuel pump should be. As I may by-pass the fuel with an old Mini electric fuel pump? Would this be a problem.

Mark

Meant to add.
I've replaced the pump diaphragm, check valves, fuel filter is in the correct orientation. Fuel lines seem to be clear

hello
as the filter is on the suction side of the pump its entirely normal for it to show 1/2 full or so while running. exactly what running problems are you having?

Re: This engine is like a woman!

Rodbolt,

The engine seems fine at idle and could probably operate at that demand all day, but open the throttle under load and the engine bogs down and eventually dies. I've been reading through outboardrepairs page for info but I'm still left scratching my head.
My Dad and I can't quite discover what is preventing the fuel pump from maintaining sufficient fuel within the filter.

Whats is the purpose of the reed block assembly??

Do any mechanics have any experience of these new fuel pump kit requirements :(
I've replaced the fuel pump dia & gaskets and in the new kit was a spring and cap to keep the diaphragm taut. But the kit recommends replacing the water pump backing plate which attachs to the engine block. Seems expensive!
