Me: I broke down on the water and need help.
911: Are you in a car?
Me: If I was in a car I'd be in real trouble. I'm in a boat. Can you put me through to the marine police?
911: Ok, please hold....
911: This is the coast guard. Where are you?
Me: Im on Greenwood Lake, the New York state end on the west side.
911: Do you know what the nearest street is?
Me: Hold on, I'll ask somebody... (yelling to the guy in a lounge chair sitting in his front yard about 30 feet away) Hello! Hey buddy, what is the house address?
Guy in chair: Its 324.
Me: 324 What?
Guy in chair: 324 (something street)...
Me: Thanks!
Me: (to Coast Guard) I'm near 324 something street.
911: Ok, we'll send someone out. What kind of boat is it?
Me: Old blue and white runabout. They gonna tow me in?
911: Probably. Give me your phone number in case I need to reach you.
Me: Ok my cell number is xxxxxxxxx....
911: Ok, I'll send them out.

twenty minutes later and still no help, so I try to start the motor and it runs good, no longer overheating. So we take off and head back to the marina at 5 mph. Then we see the Coast Guard come roaring down the lake. I wave to them. They wave back and keep going. I keep waving and sound horn, they come back to check me out. Really great bunch of guys. I thought they would be po'd that we left, but just wanted to know if we were OK and what was the matter. I explained we overheated and were adrift. Wind almost blew us into the shore. It is just bolders and very deep water even though we were only 20 feet from shore.

They said its common to overheat with all the grass and they follow us back to the marina with the lights going.

I felt rather dumb that the boat started and ran OK after overheating and calling 911 to have the Coast Guard save us. Especially after having to ask a guy on shore what the street address was there.

That was too simple. I posted my stranded story before. I was stranded at a local lake, end of the season, Sunday evening. I do have a cell phone, VHF would not matter at this lake. I dig through the boat and find a broucher for the lake's marina. I call and as expected, no answer, it is Sunday afternoon around 5. I don't have any other numbers to call, so I call the wife. She calls Fish and Wildlife, they are the water cops here. No answer and no emergency numbers. We don't know who to call, so she starts calling the county Search and Rescues. A note about this lake, it is located in 3 counties. After she gets and answer at one, they check to see if I am in their county; I am, hurray! 2 hours later in the pitch black they arrive and tow me back in.

Lucky it wasn't a 911 operator around here..

There was a local news story about a woman who called 911 and said her 14 year old daughter going crazy and beating her up.

The Cop who answered the 911 call let her go on, and finally asked her, "Do you want us to come over and shoot her"?

They played the tape on TV,,, she didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did.

Most of the time when you wave frantically the other people wave back with the same enthusiasm!

Maybe a pocket GPS would have been easier.

:D

"Maybe a pocket GPS would have been easier"

Provided you remember to mark your launch ramp. Last October I launched at a bush ramp about 150km away from here. Fished the harbour for the weekend & camped on an island. Sunday afternoon we headed back, but couldn't find which creek to go up for the ramp - I'd forgotten to mark it on the GPS. Ended up heading for a local resort. It was off season so no one available to take me to the car. Had to ring my wife to come out. Well after dark when she arrived. She took me to get the car then headed home. The mate & I had to wait till 0115 for the boat to float off the sand (large tides here). Got home abour 0300. She hasn't let me live it down yet.But I remember to mark ALL ramps now.
