New one to me too, but really who is surprised? The Internet is all about "shock value".

Maybe it's just me, but a death threat sent to "whom it may concern", does not carry much weight, since everything in it was generic and the email address contained a real name.

Here is how I handle this stuff:

1. Google some text contained in the message, like "HELLO WHAT EVER YOU CALL YOURSELF". Chances others (maybe millions) have seen it too and will report on it.

2. Press the "delete" key.

3. Get on with life. This stuff will cause you to have a bad day, only if you let it.

Re: This is getting serious now

Hmmm, seems to me there were a couple of S. African blokes that posted here ... There was/is one who's name escapes me right now (must be the old age thing) but if I am correct, and I usually am ;), he did some boat modifications for runners ... Liked his RIB's ... better be careful there ... :D

I still say it is probably some Nigerians - either based out of, or using an email address from, South Africa.

Glad you reported it!

Boy, those Nigerians are really getting to be quite uppity!

Before, that nice exiled Nigerian dictator, wanted to give me a cut of his $40 million dollars, now he wants to kill me if I don't cough up $5K.

How rude ;(

I've heard about this scam before . It's been around for awhile. I have my e mail set up in such a way that I can see the name of the e mail sender before I open it. I never open e mail from someone I don't know.

Be glad it was south africa. Unlike many south african nations, they do prosecute these offenders, but you'll need to talk to the right people to get that done. You can start by forwarding the email to the FBI's internet crime complaint center at: http://www.ic3.gov/

Also, forward it on to the South African embassy in Washington D.C. at: http://www.saembassy.org/

Finally, get the state department involved by forwarding it on to the South African US embassy at: http://southafrica.usembassy.gov/

You do all that, and I've got 10 bucks that says that person will cease to be able to see natural daylight within a month. :D

Thanks Sarge for the links.
One thing about it, it won't hurt to send it to them.

Are you sure you want your email being sent into those countries???? Based on all the BS we get now in the email...... I would not trust anyone overthere or their computer to be secure.

The primary thing you will accomplish is to be sending them a valid working email address...... which would result in more scams and spam.

Think about it.

Delete it and move on. Start thinking about fishing this spring during the spawn! ;)

Re: This is getting serious now

I hear ya Bob.
Don't have to worry about it now.
The deputy called me and wanted me to forward it to him and so I did.
It's in his hands now.
Now where's that zucchini? :)

I would have had a lot of fun with this. Tell him you don't have the 6k, but you can give him $200 in nickles and dimes. Explain to him that is in a brown paper bag in a dumpster behind the waffle house. When he tells you to go get it and send it western union, explain to him that you slipped on some banana pancake toppings and broke your hip. You won't be able to move for 60 days. Ask him to postpone the hit until then.

Ask if he would accept a check for $15000 and send you back the excess! :D

I would doubt that they will have the resources or know-how to deal with an international issue... I'd send it on to those people I listed before, just to make sure something gets done about it.
